Is is Lawrence or Lawrance ??

Lawrance made APU's for aircraft in WWII, sounds possibly like one of their units.

They made v twins and radials that were used for auxilary power units in ww2 and later aircraft. These provided power to get a engine started so that it's generator would be used to start the rest of the engines. The radials have been converted to power some homebuilt aircraft. The radial is a real class high quality engine. You can also convert apu's to arc welders and they work well for that application.
