Yep, I saw one several years ago in a collection up in Mt. Joy, Pa. I remember it because my grandfather used to take me to one of the Spotless stores when I was a kid. I believe I have a picture of it around here somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it out.

after 16 hours of trying to get this picture posted I THINK we got it right. If the picture doesn't show up for you, let me know and I'll shoot the computer. Seriously, this is the engine I'm seeking information on. Thanks for your responses. Lindsey

Were "Bulseye" engines built by Jacobsen? I saw a Bulseye that looks a LOT like this engine too, but it was many years ago and my memory isn't perfect. I'm no expert on Sideshaft engines, so thought I'd ask.

This engine was in a hen house and every hole and dimple was full of and coated with some type of preservative that looks alot like chicken maneur. I found a crack in one of the flywheels yesterday. Do any of you know where I can find one. Thanks, Lindsey

Lindsey, I'm sorry about the flywheel. It would still be a great looking engine even if you didn't have the nerve (or had the good sense not to) to run it. If you get too disgusted with it, sell it to me. Please tell us where you're located and how you found it. The story is usually the best part. Kevin in Nebraska

The engine is a Jacobson. Bullseye was the TRADE name put on engines built by Jacobson that were sold by Montgomery-Ward, just as Economy was the TRADE name for engines sold by Sears-Roebuck. Al Wait

This is a Spotless, made by Jacobson as was the Bullseye. The Spotless has a vertical flyball governor while the jacobsons and Bullseyes have the governor on the sideshaft. Also, the Bullseyes I'm familiar with have larger lip on the water hopper. I have 2 Jacobsons and 2 Bullseyes, all with the governor on the layshaft, and the only 2 Spotless' I've seen both had vertical governors.

ALL of the sideshaft Jacobson built engines "can" have either a vert flyball or a layshaft govenor. The Bulleyes name were sold through montgomery Ward. The Spotless was a company that bought Jacobsen engines and retagged them as there own. Moodey out of Cananda is another one that did that

Lindsey,
Where is the flywheel cracked, is it on a spoke, hub, or on the rim? If the hub or spoke is cracked you might find someone to braze or even weld the break and possibly be OK, maybe even place a heat shrunk band around the rim, providing you keep the engine running slow. If you have a crack in the rim, that flywheel is best suited for the scrap man, or as a pattern for a recast. Cracked flywheels are dangerous, keep in mind what could possibly happen and the consequences of personal and /or property damage, and your insurance coverage, someone WILL be held liable. I was on a safety team for a large manufacturing company and took an OSHA certification class, you would be surprised how far the blame can be spread when a lawsuit comes into play. Don't bring any compromised engines to a show. Good Luck, and congratulations for finding a nice engine! Keep Enjoying Old Iron, Walt Beeman |
