I listed an engine on ebay last night and checked my email and a scammer had used the buy it now option and wants me to accept a "cashiers check" and wire the excess funds, geez I was born yesterday and they just happen to be new to ebay with no feedback. Hopefully ebay will let me relist the item with no problems? Guess we can't use the buy it now option.

Yes, this has been happening quite a bit lately. I had one seven day auction ruined with about 8 hours left to go. The email originated from the UK. It's not fair to all involved -especially the folks that had placed legitimate bids. If you get right on it and send the no-spelling email and all other facts to ebay you will be taken care of promptly and the bidder will be banned. The final value fee will be refunded. Your listing fee will not be refunded. They can't control who hits that buy it now button. Yes, it appears the Buy it now button has become a temporary liability

The answer to this is..I think...Ebay offers a buy it now pay now option via Paypal…so that if the “Buy it now” option is used the auction will continue until they pay you by Paypal…I’m not sure if there are other payment options with “buy now pay now”….But, hey I’d rather cut my odds to only folks with a Paypal account than lose money and time to some skankboy scammer.

Scammers never seem to run out of ideas ,which sucks for normal honest people who use ebay to buy parts and other things which you wouldnt find in your area. Now the buy it now feature is targeted what next ? Its to bad that the people doing the scamming dont have the brains to know that they will be caught in the end so why scam?? I dont think ebay should have a buy now pay now service since , although it would proably cut down fraud significantly it would also deter others like my self who dont have a pay pal account or dont want to use a credit cardit to pay on ebay, I have been buying on ebay for almost 5 years now and I always use a money order its always worked. About a few weeks ago I was scanning ebay and I saw something I couldnt beleve it was a complete Fairbanks Morse Dishpan Battery Box ,with a buy it now price of $ 85.00 I couldnt beleve it I jumped at the chance and bought it now I have 2 complete 1 1/2 hp Hit and Miss Dishpans
I just thought I would put my two cents in ~ Jonathan |

I'm with you Jonathon! I've found a lot of great old engine bargains on Ebay. It serves as a central "department store" without having to drive to a bunch of swap meets. But I will NOT use anything except a good old money order. If the seller won't accept it because of the latest and greatest technology, then I guess I don't need the part that bad! As for scammers..do these people really think that Americans are that stupid? At the very least I would insist that I be allowed to hold any form of payment for clearing and I'll be damned if I'm going to refund any "overage". He should have sent the correct amount in the first place! Just my 23 cents worth. Best to all, George

I'm a power seller on Ebay and I very seldom use Buy it Now and would never use Buy now pay now for just the reasons you guys mention (I like those MO's)...but..my thought was for the folks that prefer to use it....I like the good old fashion auction format and let traffic determine the price. Nate

One would think that ebay would reject the "buy it now" option on buyers which had less than five positive feedbacks. The scammers would probably just find another way to get around it. Sounds like a good idea to me!
The current rules are: "Note: To qualify to use Buy It Now as a buyer, you must: Have feedback greater than or equal to 0 OR Have a credit card (or debit card) on file". Doesn't sound like much of a safeguard to me......Helen |
