The max on attached pictures is 800X600 but keep in mind that your overall filesize system storage capacity will have a limit. If you use off-site storage, there is no limit except that the system may crop huge photos to the size of the frame. Your photo below is off site and therefore there is no thumbnail. -- Harry

Nice engine, D.J !! Looks like you swept the floor since I was there last winter, picking up that Empire parts engine.

Iron Horse: your picture displays, so what's wrong? That it displays as a thumbnail? That saves people on dialup a bunch of time rather than having to wait for a page full of photos they might not want to see. It also GREATLY decreases the data passing through Harry's servers. I have dsl internet service and STILL prefer the thumbnail views. If you have your OWN webspace to save pics and LINK to them THEN the pics will display full size IN the post. And remember to size your photos to less than 800 x 600 pixels.

Update:
That "safe mode" was an early bug that was wiped out immediately after this thread started. It involved a temporary storage file that is in use while uploading takes place. Then the photos are stored in a database for all future viewing. Thumbnails are automatically generated by the system. There is a way to downsize externally linked photos, but I haven't found the code location yet. ![]() There are two ways to include photos or graphics here. The one above was placed by using [ I M G] http : // www . mysite . com / myphotodirectory / myphoto.jpg [ / I M G ] - I spaced all that out so you can see it without the system interpreting it as a link. The other way is to upload an attachment in the area under your "post message" edit window where it says "manage attachments." You "browse" your computer directory for the photo you want and upload it. It must be sized properly! Then the system makes the thumbnail and links it to your post. |

Just to double check that uploading still works:
manage attachments - browse - upload - close window - submit reply |

Harry, do you have any suggestions for making the avatar clearer?
First, I tried reducing a 75KB pic--to blurred. I then scanned my card and got a 21KB pic and compressed it to 65x65. What can I do to improve it? EDIT: Use "sharpen edges" on your photo processing software. -- Harry

I'll try one with lower case img in the brackets. You have to be sure to "close" the tag /img with the slash bar. Also, if you use "center", all tags must close in the same order that they opened.
![]() [ c e n t e r ][ i m g ] h t t p : / / w w w . o l d - e n g i n e . c o m / i m a g e / m a c h i n e r y / k e y s t o n e 3 . j p g [ / i m g ][ / c e n t e r ] REMOVE THE SPACES IN THE TAGS ABOVE. THE SPACES ARE PUT THESE SO YOU CAN SEE THE COMMAND TAGS. You can pick these tags from the upper tool bar in your editor. By the way, I'd like to find a pulley like that one. |

In other words and uploaded image can only be attached to one message.
Another question? Things like the smilies and the link buttons always seem to put the code onto the end of the message rather then at the cursor position. Works that way on all boards I have been on, I imagine it is simpler to do it that way but it makes adding to the message a bit confusing at times. ____ Andre' |

The smilies
go wherever you have your edit cursor and click. The same with images and links, but attachments will most likely be at the end of a post.

Just a question Harry. When I attach a picture to my post through the board, I can go to manage attachments. When there I see that I am using space. What happens if I post too many pictures, or if that fills up? I saw no area to delete old pictures, so I would have to assume that the system eventually transfers them into the archive or something to that effect .
Thanks for all the hard work!!!

As it stands, I have assigned 1,000,000 bytes to users for uploaded storage. It seems too bad to delete anything after going to the work of uploading pictures. I think there is a way to move attachments from the database to file space, but I haven't dealt with that yet. The disk drives are 67,000,000,000 each and there are two of them with one spare slot.
You can manage your attachments in your user control panel - left menu at the bottom - attachments. You get to see how many times they were downloaded and the total space consumed. If you are getting close to capacity, you can either prune some out from the test board if you have any there or let me know if you need more space. The database is presently just under 100,000,000 bytes. Amazingly, this system has the ability to store the database on a separate server, so I guess we have plenty of room to grow.

Craig I had a problem last night linking images from my own web space. I had scanned images two at a time and named SOME them "such & such" and they would NOT display although they would hotlink. It was driving me nuts!!! THENit dawned on me that certain symbols are not allowed in file naming. I changed the & to and and everything worked fine!!! I see what you mean, it is ALREADY being hosted HERE. Probably a server file thing that YOU don't have permission to address......maybe......
