Default Sears Engine

Nick -

The engine was built by Briggs and Stratton. It looks like a model "A", but I'm not an expert on Briggs engines. Check out the Antique Small Engine Collectors Club at www.asecc.com; Click on technical data/Briggs and Stratton data. From there you can click on engine identification and engine description, which will help you make a definite ID of your engine.

Chris

p.s. Your neighbor threw away a nice engine.

Definitely looks like a model A Briggs. One of the later models. Why would someone throw a nice engine like that away? Good save!

Smile Sears engine

Nick,
My God, the GAS TANK is worth what you "paid" for the engine! Assuming it runs with very little work, you have a nice little antique to power something with. Find another "trash treasure" and get started in a great hobby with some great people. Best of luck, George

Default sears roebuck&co. engine

It might be a Briggs Model A, but I looks a lot like the Briggs Model B I have on a Kohler 800 generator. Mine starts with a crank. Do you get a spark from the magneto? edstoller at earthlink dot net.

Your engine is a model A Briggs. The air cleaner pipe would be longer on a model B due to the engine being physically bigger. Your "compressor" is actually a spray pump from some kind of orchard sprayer. Maybe a small Hardie sprayer, but I'm not positive about that.

Nick,

I don't have spark plug info pertaining to the Briggs & Stratton model "A" engine in particular at the moment, but my 1968 Champion spark plug chart advises that heads with 18mm threads for the spark plug use Champion D-16 and heads with 14mm threads use J-8 or CJ-8 spark plugs. The latter is gapped at .030". Chart doesn't show gap for the D-16 plug. I'm assuming that your engine would use the Champion D-16 or equivilent plug from another manufacturer.

Nice find.

Bill

Tuis will not need much cosmetic work. The paint looks almost new.

Nick, You can go to the Briggs and Stratton web site and buy a service manual that covers out of production Briggs engines. It covers most engines from 1919-1981 and has about anything you would want to know.I think I paid about $33.00 with shipping and had it the next day.
The book says the A uses a Champion 8 com or Autolite B7.
I hope this helps, and that I did it right as this is my first post after lurking for a year or more. Mark:

The plug gap is .025" for your engine.
