I've tested flywheel magneto coils by using a battery. Connect the negative terminal of a 6V or 12V battery (something like a cycle or lawnmower battery) to the chassis of the engine.

Make sure the points are OPEN.

Make sure the condenser (a good one) is connected.

Now, hook one end of a wire to the positive terminal of the battery and, with a spark gap of about 3/8" from the plug wire to ground, quickly flick the other end of the wire across the condenser (and coil primary) terminal.

If the coil and condenser are good, you should get a strong spark every time you flick the wire over the primary of the coil.

DO NOT leave the wire connected to the primary of the coil over a split second because it will turn the coil into a heater.

Good luck and take care - Elden

OOPS!!!!!!!

I left out one important connection. Obviously you have to connect the negative terminal of the battery to the engine block. Otherwise there will be no circuit........DUH!
