This engine is a property of the School of Engineering of the UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul) by more than 100 years. 15 years ago, it was found abandoned in a bilge and was completely restored by engineering students and it is part today of the of the Museum of the Engine, kept for the students.
This engine was originally used to generate power for academic studies. You can see pics here: http://www.mecanica.ufrgs.br/mmotor/otto.htm and here: http://www.mecanica.ufrgs.br/mmotor/ottofotos.htm |

The 5 HP Otto in Brasil serial number 14239 was not manufactured until late 1912 or 1913. The confusion comes from the 1894 patent plate that is on most all Philadelphia Otto engines. I believe I had gotten an email from the university several years ago and replied to it but never had any more replies due to the language barrier. I would suggest that the picture of the testing room on the university website link shows the Otto when new working along side a Gray engine and another unidentified vertical. The picture caption suggests 1912 and that is probably accurate. Many Otto engines were shipped overseas to unnamed destinations just listed on the shipping papers as being delivered to a freight broker or ship in NYC. Serial # 16026 was the last engine made. About 1894 they were making engines in the 4000 serial number range. Otto engines in Philadelphia were built in lots or groups of 5 to 75 engines per size range with the average lot size being 25 engines. Serial numbers were served up in consecutive blocks and about 10 percent were either never used or sometimes an earlier engine was factory rebuilt and issued a new serial number.

But there is another plate with many dates indicating the patents and a final date, in prominence: 11 of September of 1894.
There is registers of existence of this engine in the university before 1910. I can send a pic of this plate for you. []'s |

http://www.mecanica.ufrgs.br/mmotor/hist.htm How we can determinate the exact date of construction for our Otto if the date of plate do not indicate the real date of manufacture? thank you Translate Portuguese here: http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en |
