I REALLY don't want to monopolize this forum but SOMEONE has to populate this thing..
Anyway, I know there is a lousy pic posted way down the list and Harry can remove that now as I am copying that text and expanding on it here: I am especially happy to be posting THIS pic. Everyone has a dream "want one but never gonna own one, don't even THINK about it" tractor or engine. THIS IS/was my dream tractor, a Nichols & Shepard 20-42 which has a headless engine. It is a smaller version of the 35-70. I have confirmed there are only 4 of these in existance. What prompted me to update this post is a story I remembered: John Schroeder of Waupaca, WI, told me he remembered a fellow who had a Nichols & Shepard tractor he used on a threshing circuit. At one stop they were barn threshing and the owner was backing into the belt on the mow incline. NOW....these tractors have one serious design flaw and that lies in the clutch shoes: when the clutch is engaged it wants to STAY engaged. You REALLY have to REEF on the clutch lever to get it disengaged. The REST of the story is he got backed into the belt alright but couldn't disengage the clutch and yanked the separator right out of the barn!!! I have a piece of N&S lit with a testimonial dated September 25, 1921, by E. T. Mather of WAUPACA, WI. who owned a 25-50 N&S. I wonder if he was the guy with the bad experience??
