Default Homebuilt Tractor

Here is a picture of a homebuilt tractor that I took at a recent show. It's powered by a small lawnmower engine with a transmission and final drive off a riding lawnmower. Does anyone have or know of plans for such vehicle. I guess I could build it "hit and miss" fashion but it would be a lot easier if I had a set of plans. Thanks.

Jewell Nieman in Nebraska has books on building a 1/2 sized John Deere model "D" or "G" using a JD LUC engine 402 678 3325. Good plans, great parade tractors. you are looking at at perhaps 1200 hrs but well worth the effort I have built both of them Vic

Here is a JD R about 1/3 or 1/2 size that was at the White Pine show last year. The guy used a small diesel engine that he had cut down and laid down and he used a weed eater engine for a starting engine. He would pull the rip cord on the dash and then the starting engine would start and then pull the levers and the diesel would start up. Sounded just like the real thing. He and his wife would ride in the attached trailer and Oscar ( the Driver ) would drive through the parade. Blew Black Smoke and scratched a little when it came up the steep hill in the parade route...

You might want to check out these plans. It could give you an idea anyway. It is the old Vintage Farm Plans site.

Thanks Vic!!! There are (and were) some "model" builders here in Wisconsin too. May favorite of all time is a scale 20-40 Rumely built TOTALLY (almost) from scratch. Built by Mike Kolb of Oshkosh (sadly deceased), the only parts he did not fabricate were pistons and rods from a DC Case I believe. It is TRULY a miniature 20-40 Rumely in EVERY respect. It looks, sounds and runs just like the real thing. We had the priviledge of babbitting a rod bearing in that tractor a couple years ago. Mike also built 2 separators (I believe) that are as accurate as the tractor. He enjoyed showing and threshing with this setup. Another is Jim Gutenberger of Colby with a similar setup.

Here is my New-Way Powered McCormick 10-20 that I am working on. I found the frame (less Engine & trans) in the woods and decided to make a go at it. Lot of fun making linkages and setting this this up. Belt Pulley from engine to power shaft. I have a lot more work to do, but the hard part is over. S hould be ready and painted by this fall. (Hopefully)

Last year at Portland I met Elwin Muntz, he built this beautiful tractor, it runs like a clock. Exceptional craftmansship.

Looking good, Smoke. This is the first time I have seen a full shot of the tractor. Not bad.

Here is Richard Mauney's latest creation at the Dallas 04 show. Roy McSwain is the passenger. It's powered by IHC LB 3/5. Tilt steering? of course!

I tried to download the plans but was unable to access the site. I am on a dial-up, but hope to still be able to check them out. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A son of Mike's who lives around Waupaca, WI, has the Rumely and a separator. As I mentioned in a previous post we babbitted a connecting rod on that "model". I just HATE calling that tractor a MODEL--it IS a Rumely...
Anyway, he just doesn't have time YET to make the shows but will in the near future.
Craig

Well, I needed a way to move this engine. SO, I built this engine cart for it.

Fun project,

Jim

Jim's tractor is very nice, and fun to drive. He had to phisically force me to drive it at Alan Schurman's show last year ........well, not quite force me to, but it is fun. Good job Jim, you need to get up to my part of the country soon.
