Default Computer Problems

Can anyone tell me why our computer will convert a jpeg picture to a DAT file when saved on the computer? It will only do this occassionally and not for all pictures saved. Occassionally when I save a couple of pictures from the same email that were sent as jpeg's it will save one as a jpeg and the other as a DAT file. Tried to help out a fellow 'Staker with posting a couple of pictures today and discovered they were converted to DAT files and wouldn't upload.

We're running Wimndows XP Home Edition on our Sony Vaio computer.

Thanks for any assistance provided.

Bill

When that happens, and there really isn't any reason for it, There are two ways to correct the error. One is to right click the file and select "open with" and browse to the program you want to open that type of file and make that the default (always use this program...blah blah). It's BEST if you have a separate image editing program for handling all your images. The other way to change the file association is to hold the ALT key and LEFT click the file which also will allow you to change the association. These apply to the XP OS.
I use one program for "quick and dirty" editing and also have Photoshop. Even Photoshop can't keep its own icons in order. I never know WHAT icon is going to show up indicating a Photoshop image......

I had a problem similar with W2K and the problem was the cache of temporary internet files was full. Search google groups for "won't save as jpg" They give a simple way of clearing temporay internet files. I hope this works for you. U J Hale
