Default novo or what?

i have this up-right motor that is about a three h.p.,it looks like a novo and i thought it was a novo, untill i talked to Ed; at Hit-Miss,he said if it is a novo all the part numbers start with a S,these part numbers on this eng. start with J4 or J40.The original color is an Ox-vlood red, also the top of the cooling tank is removeable,This is so you can remove the two bull-plugs in side the tank,so you can remove the intake and exhaust valves;this motor dont have valve cages that you remove so you can get at the valves. It has the ser. number stamped on the bottom of the cooling tank,it is also stamped on the end of the crank shaft.the ser. number is C8355.There is no name plate or eny other markings.I am in the process of restoreing this eng. now,and would sure like to know what it is.---the bore&stoke is 4 1/4 -5 1/2.

Does the engine have a flyball govenor? Can you post a pic or E-mail a pic to me? You might have a 3-1/2 hp NORTHWESTERN, built by Northwestern Steel & Iron Works, Eau Claire, WI. They look somewhat like a NOVO & are often mistaken for them.

Wayne,

I've been trying to email you and send you a picture but keep getting an error message when I hit the send button. Not sure if the problem is at my end but other emails are working. Can you send me your email address so I can try again?

Thanks,

Bill
