Default Posting Messages On This Site - Norton

I just discovered why some people have said that they can't see how to post messages on this bulletin board.

Each time you enter a board on this site, you are offered a button to "Post New Thread" at the top and bottom of the page.

Each time you enter a thread, you are offered a button that says, "Post Reply" at the top and bottom of the thread.

If you have installed Norton Internet Security or other programming that defeats the HTTP_REFERER information from your web browser, you can not view images or photos on this web site. This is because I do not allow other web sites to link to my graphics or photos. This was much the same on the old archives where I did not allow off-site pages to call my program scripts.

In Norton Internet Security, you can add a site: www.smokstak.com and then go to Advanced Options and flag it to not block the Referer. While you are there, go to Active Content and allow scripts to execute. You can set this for just this web site so that you are protected when you cruise off to the deeper entrails of the internet.

In summary, if you monkey up your web browser, something's going to break. This has, I'm sure, caused hard feelings and short attitudes about the new SmokStak board. If you want to join us - fix it. It's as simple as that.

Please look in on our Policy Statement before posting on SmokStak bulletin boards.

Unhappy Re: Posting Messages On This Site

Well I guess I have been having trouble findiing my way around this thing. I don't have a problem with the security, just can't find everything as easily as I used to, but then I am no computer expert. I guess sooner or later I will find what button to push and when to push it. Sorry to cause concerns, but I guess I'll continue to try.

My computer is an older Dell unit, and it does not like the new board. It takes a long time to load up, and navigation is a chore. It is not the board's fault - it is my antiquated equipment. As I have done, just take your time and look over everything. Read the small print as well as the large. I am not computer savvy either, but if you take your time all is well! Thank You Harry for the great site! eventually I will get a new computer to keep up with it better, however it won't input any faster than my 2 fingers can type (HA-HA)

Hi Andrew: I am one of them 2 Fingered guys myself.... Funny how good you can do after a little practice... I'm Computer Illiteret but Learning at 62...

I started with Webtv about 5 years ago.... About the worst browser you can have but I know a couple guys that still have it and can read the new board OK but they never did say much.

I may have a slight advantage as I read a couple other (Machinist) boards that are some what the same Format.

"How do you quote part of a previous post?" Put Curser on the beginning of the part you want to post... Squeeze left mouse button... Drag mouse to highlight the part you want then squeeze right mouse button and click copy. then go to reply and squeeze right mouse button and click paste. Then write the part you want to post.... Works for me Here is the part from yours again "How do you quote part of a previous post? "

Or push the "Quote" button and then put your mouse on the part you don't want, click, drag and highlight the part that you don't want. Hit the "backspace" key and the part that you don't want goes away.

The above was done by: [ Q U O T E = Ralph ] his text here [ / Q U O T E ] and [ Q U O T E = Ken ] his text here [ / Q U O T E ]

Don't forget that for each command that you open [ Q U O T E ] you then have to close it like this [ / Q U O T E ]

I spread those out with spaces so you could see them.

Or you you can use the quote and delete the part you don' want by using your left mouse button, sliding it over the text that you want to delete(this will highlight it) then hit your delete button. That is what I did here. I find that is easier for me. It will then show as quote as above........Helen

Hey Ralph

When you click QUOTE, all of the text will show in the new reply. Do you know how to highlite the text ???? Click and HOLD the left mouse button on the text you DON"T want in the reply and drag the mouse over the text. The text will now have a blue background. Push the DELETE button on the key board. Now the text you do not want is gone.

Try it a few times with out posting. You will get the hang of it.

Merry Christmas, All

Jim

I am so dumb, I haven't figured out how Harry did those 2 quotes but I'll figure it out. I hadn't seen his message before I posted mine.

I try something, then I preview my message. If I don't like it I just get rid of it and don't send it.....Helen

Recently, there has been a new worm making the rounds on the internet trying to break into bulletin boards to infect them. We have upgraded as of ysterday with a newer version of PhP and a change in the operation of this board.

Most of you never noticed a change, but if you are running Norton Internet Security, it is even more important that you add www.smokstak.com to your advanced options site list. Do not block the Referer because this is how we prevent "off-site" scoundrels from attacking the system. All images and page links must come from this site and nowhere else on the web. In case you haven't noticed, it's a rough world out there.

Hi Harry, Could not find the exact match for my question, so here it is.
Is there any way in your programming you could indicate which message is new so we do not have to search through to find new messages. I have a number of military generators and am always looking for messages about same. The message board I use most is: MILITARY MEP and GEN SETS.
Your site is GREAT and I get a wealth of information from your site, so thanks a lot for your efforts.
Don in Auburn, CA.
