Angry The firewall police

I just got hit with the firewall police, They tell me I am not allowed on Hit and Misses web site from here at work. Reason was unapproved content(I work for a school district and am on their intranet so lots of content is unapproved) but the unapproved content was weapons. Since when are there weapons on Eds site? I know the wife has said a couple of times if I order again with out askin she was gonna shoot me but surely Ed wouldn't sell her the gun Would he ?

My wife runs the computer lab at our local school and the firewalls and filters are pretty aggressive (only because the kids are just a little TOO savvy!!) and they can't access our own local Club's website because we have it hosted at Geocities which has a lot of.....uh....."other" stuff".
All it takes is ONE WORD to get you blocked. Javascript might also have something to do with it. Have you tried Harry's chatroom from work to see if you can access it?

Craig I have been on Harrys chat room from here and had no problem I was looking at Hit and Miss before Christmas and had no problem and weirdest of all every Geo site I have tried(excluding the "other stuff" of course) has worked but sometimes I have to drop my firewall at home to get on some of the Stakers websites if they are hosted by Geocities. Not a big deal really i take care of the heating and cooling around here and I will simply have to inform the computer folks that if I have any more trouble I will turn their heat off

Just a thought-The header contains the word "shoot"...that's a real bad word around schools these days...

I find it extremely hard to leave this post sit here without saying that it's not for the lack of the word "shoot" at school. It's their lack of the words "respect" and "responsibility." Of course, I come from an era when we had a "rifle club" while I was in high school. What an innovative idea! We also had shotguns and shot sporting clays. What a neat opportunity! Anyway, back to the firewall.

I don't think you caught my meaning, All I was inferring was that "shoot" may have been the word that triggered the firewall, I can't see anything else that would relate to "weapons", which was the reason he gave for it being banned. I live in the state where the Columbine shootings happened, & believe me, school officials are uptight about ANYTHING even remotely suggesting such a thing happening again. I do see what you're getting at-when I was about in the 6th or 7th grade, we got to school one morning & there was a skunk in the trap one parent had set under the school, a one room log schoolhouse which is now a registered historical building. The teacher went & got her little nickel-plated .38, gave it to me, & told me to take care of it...which I did. All of us ranch kids were familiar w/guns by that age. Just imagine a teacher doing that today...Sometimes I have the feeling I grew up in a world that doesn't exist now...a leg-hold trap isn't even legal is this fine state anymore. Man, this is OT...to tie it to this site, I now own the mill & lathe I was only dreaming about in those days, but I did have a WMB Briggs already...

Shoot may be a word that was caught by the firewall some where on this site, but it did not come from the top of this page, The word shoot is a GIF image, not letter type. I don't think this would be picked up on by a firewall.

I'm a junior in school and the fire wall is pretty strict on what can be viewed. BUT if you can get the code to "by pass the system" from the control center you should be able to get on Ed's site that way. And I read in here that you guys had gun clubs when you were in school. Just to let you know my school has one. It's still around. But I live in Ohio in one of the few counties that has what seems like a million deer so hunting is a way of life here.

Chase 16yrs old and still love old engines.

HELP - I am putting this on EnginAds because I can not get on the Stak and I am going into withdrawl. My firewall at work will not let me on it, says the site is forbidden due to alcohol and tobacco. Since when is there either of these things on the Stak? Someone must have started a thread about smokin and drinkin now I have to see if the administrator will let me on. I doubt it tho - he wouldn't let me on Hit and Miss when I was having problems there. So until I get this resolved have fun without me. Joe M.

Joe, it looks like your school district has a problem with you being on the web. It is strange that you are able to get on EnginAds if you are firewalled, but if you had this experience with hitnmiss.com then I guess they can control your web experience. There are many SmokStak threads that include alcohol - it is a fuel. There are many threads that include tobacco - it's a farm product. This is totally a B.S. argument on their part.

In a C:\> MsDos window, do a command "tracert smokstak.com" or "tracert enginads.com" and that will give a display of the pathway to here and whether you can get through. If you are using linux, the command is: traceroute smokstak.com - Maybe just a chat with your school's computer guru will shed some light on the matter.

Good luck!

-- Harry

Default My firewall problems

I am able to get on the board here at home but I have a very crappy unreliable dial up connection. as to my being booted at work I was thinkin that it might be the name itself but I don't think so or I would have been unable to get on before this besides I don't know if the firewall looks at banners or not either way I am going to have to get used to crappy until I can get my broadband connection up again Joe M.

Joe: Welcome back. I had a dial up at home and switched to cable which is sure nice. Dropped AOL @ 29.95 and the extra phone line at 17.00 which made up for the cable connection. At work, no problem while on "BREAK", yet .
