Default How much got painted at the factory?

I was looking at pix of a JD engine for sale on eBay, item=3866325455
and I see that every bit of it was painted during restoration. Every nut, bolt, rod, spring, head, lever, gears, crank handle, muffler, pulley, etc. is painted.

I was wondering at what point an engine was painted *at the factory*- was it like this one, or were just the big/core parts painted, and the add-on things like nuts, muffler, levers, etc. left bare? (I wondering in general, my question isn't specific to JD's...)

Thanks,
-Rick

Rick

From what I have seen, Once the engine was assembled, then it was painted. I have found primer UNDER parts that I have disassembled.

SO, I do not know if this is a rule of thumb or if different manufactures painted each piece individually.

Hope this is of help,

Jim

At the Hercules factory the engines were test run and adjusted. In the early days they were washed off with gasoline to wash off oil and grease and then with magneto covered, the rest of all of the engine was painted. In later years the engine went through a kind of car wash thing to clean off the oil and grease before painting. The ID tag was applied by the final engine inspector after painting and striping.

How old is the spray painting process? Did any of the factories use a brush or other painting procedures?

My Leader engine has brush strokes visible in the original paint. I imagine it was built somewhere around 1920.
