Default Valve lapping tool info needed

Didn't know if this should be on small engines or smoke stak, but here goes. The Briggs small engines have two pin holes in the valve tops. The suction cups do not like to work good when lapping valves on these, cup too big. I feel like there is a tool that fits the pin holes and has a shaft center for turning. Does anyone have one of these or know where to get one? Otherwise, I'll try to make one.

Pat~
I have one packed up some where. It resembles a brace bit drill and the tip has a small flat piece on the end of a rod with two tips that fit into those holes in the valve. As you crank, it alternates direction twisting back & forth with each twist overlapping the last to grind the valve in. I would say the one I have has to be 75 years old and works great.

I've actually tried all of the above. Ended up not using the "factory" bit and brace, just goes too fast. Easy to get an old flat blade screwdriver and grind or file away until you get the right tip. Measure and mark first to get it symetrical. Also use the suction cup. Just clean ALL the oil off the valve, then wipe the rubber cup with rubbing alcohol to get that clean. Then a drop of clean water and the suction cup will stick very well. The water adds a lot of stick factor.

craig,i wish i had time to post many old time tip's .the old timers were pretty sharp on how to fix thing's on the spot and at little or no cost.if you can find the old audels books my favorite is the 1932 silver anry.issue. they all are great.they tell how to fix magnetos.repair cracked blocks using rust joints, how to fix hit/miss engines, delco lite plants,motorcycles.airplanes.if it's a engine they can tell you how to fix it.you can find these books sometimes at and old public libairy.the one in cinti, ohio has it all in old books -chuck

Thumbs up Re: Valve lapping tool info needed

I just use a piece of rubber gas line hose slid over the end of the valve stem.

Thanks guys, I'm going to use the broom handle and nails, sounds easy, just take some dividers, index in the holes, and transfer to the end of broom handle and tap in nails and grind off heads. Don't know why I couldn't think of something that simple.

pat, don't waste your time grinding the nail heads off.just cut the heads off using a side cutter,if it,s off a little bend the nails in or out to fit.-chuck
