I.D. engine

What co. made this engine? Sears sold it, i think. The round holes in the fly wheels got me stumted. Ser. # 12542 600RPM 1 3/4 xk (yes XK)

Looks like a cross between a STOVER & a HERCULES, but my guess is that it's a late STOVER built engine.

I have seen quite a few Hercules XK engines with the round holes in the flywheels they all were throttlers not hit & miss though. I believe that is a Hercules XK

Denny, it is a throttler with a kero carb. The fly wheels are split hube with one bolt. All the stovers i'v seen are one piece. What does the XK stand for?

I am not sure what the XK designation meant, but I can tell it is definately not a Stover.

It is a Hercules built engine. The XK is the model number. If it has red paint it was sold as a Economy, green paint Hercules. Sears later sold a Stover built engine, it had disc flywheels with teardrop shaped holes in them.

It is definitly a Hercules XK.These were all throttle gov. engines and were only built in 1928-1929.In 1930 Sears started selling the JK Farmhand model Hercules which was a more modern type engine. Chip

Thanks every one for the info. I found some red paint under some grease on the timing gear so that tells me that. I allso found a big hole in the water jacket when i took the gas tank out. this engine wasn't run much by the looks of the timing gears & the push rod. Froze her up the first winter and was put in the trees for 75 years. OH well Boy what a hole

The JK was Hercules built and the,I belive is was Farmmaster, engine was Cushman built
