No, but you may want to put one on if you're going to run right beside someone. David.

Your maytag twin or single does not need the muffler to run but if you are going to run it near someone I would suggest running the same gas you use in your weed trimmer (32 -1 gas/oil mixture). Also if you really want to be nice go to a junk yard and find an old single cyl. snowmobile muffler and mount it to your engine (gives it a nice mellow sound). My dad has ran his model 92 this way for years and has never has a problem with plugs or anything.

If you do choose to use the 16-1 mixture and the flex pipe with ball on the end try and mount the ball with the slot down and always make sure the pipe and ball are lower then the engine. You will get a excess amount of oil build up in the pipe with the 16-1 mixture.

Just my two cents,
Jon

If you do run the engine with a flex pipe and muffller at a show and you want to keep the noise and smoke down to a minimum try this trick that some housewives would use when they were doing their wash.
Start the engine and then submerge the muffler in a 5 gal. bucket of water.
It will not effect the way the engine runs or have to much back pressure. The smoke and noise will almost disappear.

32:1 especially in the twins is not enough lubrication, and especially if you use the modern 2 cycle lubricants which are made for hardened roller bearings, not plain soft bronze bearings. Quite a lot of info on 2 cycle lubrication in the archives! As for Maytag Mufflers, there is an aluminum one advertised in the GEM that is a bolt on to the Maytag Twin. It bolts directly to the exhaust manifold at the flange. It works on the singles too, and is pretty quiet. Too much back pressure leads to coking (heavy carbon) in the cylenders. Running the Maytags without an axhaust pipe (open manifold) probably won't do much damage to the singles, but could lead to mixture lean out and piston damage on the twins, especially if they are loaded, due to the marginal aluminum pistons.

for a 50:1 ratio works fine in my chainsaw . it has champion h 10 c plugs in it
theye seam to be wet and fouled all the time , i know it has spark, i clean and set points at 20thousands and plug gap at 37 thousand , and put eletric motor and belt to it , all it will do is fire a couple of times but wont keep runing . any help please thanks ron brown

First, throw the H-10s away unless you have a sand type plug cleaner. the new gasoline will conduct electricity! If the plug gets wet with gas, it will short out under compression. If there is fuel wet carbon, that makes it even worse! The plugs may fire out of the engine, but they won't fire under compression! If you have an OXY-ACETYLENE torch handy, you may be able to heat the plug hot enough to burn off the carbon, but be careful not to melt the electrodes! Once you have new plugs, open the fuel cap 3 or 4 turns and after shorting BOTH plug wires to the block, kick the engine over, to clear out the excess fuel. NOTE:the 50:1 is way too lean for this engine. You will burn out the main bearings, and the con rod bearings very rapidly with this mixture! Worn mains will lead to mixture problems, as the engine will suck air thru the bearings instead of the carb. after the cylenders are cleared, gap the plugs at .020, and install. close air cap, kick it over, and once it sputters, immediatly open 1 turn, and adjust to run smooth. You don't mention if your twin is a model D, DA or WICO. The Ds were noted for bad mags. the Ds and DAs had different magneto mounts, and weren't interchangeable. You had to change backing plate abd all. I do not know if the new mags agvertised work well. If the engine still cuts up, go to a auto parts store and buy a spark inducater. This will light up when the engine fires. You often see them at engine shows too! If the light flashes steady, your problem is mixture, if it is intermittant, probably a bad coil or condenser. DO NOT stop this engine by pulling off a plug wire! That is the fastest way to burn out the coil If you happen to pull off a plug wire and the engine keeps running, the coil is bad! Hi tension comes out of coil, thry plug, thru block, thru other plug and back to coil. The coil has no internal connection to ground If you get an uhm readund to ground with the secondaries, the coil is bad. Need more info? Email me!

Make a fresh batch of mix about 25:1 is fine
Get new plugs, set gap to 30 thous
Check condenser.

I custom made a stainless steel pipe for my model 92 . So far, it runs fine.

Here are a couple of pictures of an adapter I made for my Maytags - I have a 92 with one on it too. Made from a block of aluminum from the scrap bin at work. I band-sawed the rough shape and finished it up on a disc sander. Drilled & threaded the center hole for 1" NPT. Used a 1" - 3/4" bell reducer and a Briggs & Stratton type muffler on the 72. Used a 1" NPT Wisconsin style muffler on the 92. The 72 has a nice 'purr', but the 92 still has kind of a harsh raspy pop that I wish I could 'mellow' out a bit more.
I found that old Tecumseh 5/16" head bolts with the flanged heads are a good match for my adapter.

Want a quiet muffler for the single? Look up the Nelson muffler Co. They make several good small mufflers.
