Default help with flat head powered welder

hey guys new here and like this site good job.

please dont bash me if this is not a topic for this forum just trying to get some info. Over the weekend I came acrossed a old flat head powered welder the man that had it said he tool it in on a trade and never had time to play with it.

so I started checking it out and could not find any kind if info on the plates I did find a place that was stamped made in the usa. the man told me that he was told that the motor on it was a jeep engine . I dont know but I can get this welder for the cost of moving it out of his way, Its mounted on a trailer. so that is easy enough . the whole thing is in a case that has the rad. in front the exhaust coming out the top. and looks to be red in color.

Any ideas or places to help indentiy this thing would be great.

Thanks

I would get it home and start scraping and digging into it and you may find some identifying things. If you could post a picture, it would help.

That's how it's done, eh Jim?

My friend has a unit which is very similar to what you describe. It is indeed the old 4-cyl Jeep engine.

I have a WW2 Navy Hobart with a 6-cyl flathead Chrysler Industrial engine. Looks terrible, but it's the sweetest welder I own! Very smooth burning stick welder.

Since it's free, take it home and dig in as Jim sez !

Being red in color, it may be a Lincoln welding machine. In any case, it can't hurt to take it home!

4 cyl. flat head....Could be a Lincoln L200 pipeline welder. Might not be a Jeep engine, but a 4cyl. Continental engine. See if there are any casting numbers on the block, and post them.

Responding to this because I am not sure you confirm it is a 4 cyl. engine?
In the early 50's I used (field work) a purpose built trailer mounted Lincoln 250A. welder direct coupled to a governed Ford V8 side valve (the one with the "crab" distributor at the front. I would say that it was a unit manufactured by Lincoln in the USA (am in Australia)
This had to be one of the smoothest welders I ever used, she was a bit heavy to tow and thirsty though. My present one is the Lincoln 150amp./5kva. "Weldnpower", fraction of the size and thirst but!

Alot of them welders that had red on them were Lincolns and used Continental Engines as stated above by someone. Only thing I know about jeeps and welding is that old jeep alternators where good to use in making a homemade welder.I am by no means a PROFESSIONAL in this area of welding but thats what I heard thru the grapevine. I worked on one of these a while back. It was a jeep powered Hobart. It had red paint on it. It welded like a champ. Dont know about the welder end, but 134 Jeep parts are easily available. Check if the distributor comes out of the side of the block at an angle. If so its a Jeep. Most Continentals I have delt with come out the top of the head. Not alot of other diferences. I would get it and give it a try. Good luck!

I have 2 Lincolns(SA-200 and an SA-250) with Continental F-163 motors in them, the 71' has a magneto coming out behind the governer. The 89' has a distributor in the top of the motor, coming out between 2 and 3. Both run great and weld even better.
