I reckon we all knew it was just a matter of time before the politicians started diggin their hands into it. Probably won't be long before other states follow. Starting May 2nd you will need an auctioneers license to sell on eBay in the state of Ohio.http://www.mariettatimes.com/news/st...1ebaystory.asp

because the law is bad, and there will be a backlash.

"An emergency piece of legislation was introduced Tuesday in the Senate to exclude people who sell their own property from having to get a license. No action has yet been taken on the proposed change."

This is another reason that Taft was voted the "Worst" governer in the U.S. on the top ten list of bad politicians(the other nine were democrats FYI). I am sorry he snookered me out of my vote. I should have voted for Hagen as he was honest and told us up front that he would tax us back to the stone age! Oh well, two more years and maybe Ohio can get back to being an industrial leader like we used to be. Yes, I am a little bitter!

We can't blame Ohios economic situation on the President. We are in this boat because of decisions that were made in Columbus way before Bush was in Washington and bad local decisions since then. As far as the Ebay license, the way I understand it is that the individual would have to get one, which would cost a fee and most likely require us to collect sales tax. It is nothing more than a government money grab! Speaking of which, I heard that now Ohio wants to charge $5.00 a head to enter the state parks. Didn't some of my tax dollars already cover admission?

Funny thing is they think they will make a lot of money off this but I am sure a lot of people will just stop using it and they will gain nothing. Also eBay offers a section where you can sell items at a fixed price or best offer(buy it now) and it says in the description of this service that it is not an auction, so I am guessing you don't need a license for this, since it's not an auction? Please let's keep politics out of this site, we have to deal enough with crap the rest of the day.

Hey, It ain't just Ohio or Indiana or Illinois and so on......

As long as we as citizens continue to put up with people who even suggest such bad ideas we will continue to languish in the economic mess we're in.

This is not GW's fault or Bill's fault or the Ohio gov's fault. It is our fault as a country of individuals for allowing people who do not produce anything of value to dictate policy and law to those who do. We have allowed those without to demand of those who have through entitlement.
I bust my butt day in and day out to EARN my wages. Only to have my government DEMAND nearly 30% of it to finance pork, entitlements and the whim of others. They do so by force...Not sure about that? Try not paying your taxes and see where you end up. The threat of jail sounds like force to me. This didn't happen last week. The country has slowly sanctioned the problem by not standing up for their rights as individuals. Every freedom we give up increases the power of those who take it.

We can start by putting our money where our mouths are. I'm sure most of us have whined about the little guy losing out when the W-Mart comes to town. It doesn't take long though before we run down there to buy something because it's cheap. Face it, everyone wants a lot for their dollar. I finally stopped doing that. I disagree with many of W-Mart's business practices and I don't spend my dollars there anymore. Because it matters to me, I try to patronize local businesses where there is one person running the show. He puts his values on the line every morning when he opens for business. I vote for that guy one dollar at a time.

The giant faceless corporations who give exec's healthy bonuses for poor or lackluster peformance are certainly not the way back to prosperity either. This country attained the stature that we enjoy today through the work of individuals. Whether they owned the mills or put forth their strength and sweat to make them run....individuals got us here. Until we start to act like individuals whose rights are being threatened, nitwit laws like the one mentioned will continue to proliferate. Soapbox off.

Ahhhh, who is John Galt?

I used to work at a w-mart ware house 15 years ago the monthly meetings they had they would say, we can go into any small town and not hurt local busisness, ya right. They always preached that they wanted to shut down sears, montgumrey wards, kmart and so on. Well one of them is almost completely gone. And the rest are hurting. Sorry i know its off topic but it really bothers me.

Hi Chris. Yeah, that one burns me too. But fortunately, it's 5 bucks a car and not per head. I'm glad it's not per person, I come from a large family and we like to spend weekends at Forked Run. David.

Hi Keven, I wanted to get confirmation before I answered your question, only I didn't know where to go to get it. But I think that all legislation is proposed legislation until the actual date it goes into effect. Until that date it can be changed, or even struck down, without no major hassles, but after it actually becomes a law, a whole new set of rules go into effect to change it. Someone that knows political science is welcome to jump in here and correct me. I'm more than willing to learn. For you guys that use eBay a lot, now is the time to start to get something going to change it, it won't be near as easy after it takes effect. I don't know how to go about changing things, the only thing I know to do is that if I see something that I don't think is right, I don't use that product, or buy from that store, whatever the case is. I know that by myself I'm not a very big chunk of grease, but if enough chunks of grease will start leaving the wheel, that squeaking is going to get awful annoying to somebody. David.

I assume Ohio has a sales tax. And it sounds like the ohio governor is trying to collect that tax. Well? I pay my taxes. I complain, but I pay. I complain and I vote. Bottom line is I pay and I expect EVERYONE else to do the same. Or repeal the tax.

I pay sales tax, re-estate tax, auto excise tax, gasoline tax, capitol gains, highway tolls, income tax, social security tax, medicaire tax, you name it, I pay. AND did I mention: I VOTE.

The problem as proposed is the method of collection. An auction lisence for all the small time sellers does not make sense. I'd like to hear some constructive alternatives? I hope you guys are not saying internet sales should be exempt (or voluntary) from sales tax? In other words I can pay the tax but others dont?

I would suggest you all ask that ebay collect sales taxes along with the commission, same as the XYZ_mart's? I assume the tax is due when the sale is by an ohio resident to an ohio resident. Or same state sale, in a state with a sales tax. That would be easy for ebay to handle.

the reason these stupid lazy politicans want more tax money is because of the so called deficit, when actually what we have is really overspending by these clowns. stop the over spending and pretty soon the deficit gets a lot smaller, but we all know that not enought people will complain so it is much easier just to raise taxes. and yes im one of them people who vote. it doesnt do much good but i still do it.

I tell people that because of all of the 50 states having there own Quarter with their state symbol and a motto that Washington DC wants to have one of their own. I tell people that they are asking people what picture and moto to put on the back of the Washington DC Quarter.

Then I tell them that my suggestion is to put a picture of two men driving a Caterpiller tractor pushing money over a cliff with a motto of "Your Congress and Senate at Work"

As I see it, E-bay is the auctioneer. they should buy the license. the seller is the one that list a item with E=bay. If you had a auction at your home or farm, in Illinois, the auctioneer is the one that has the licence. Not the seller or owner. Bob Ronning
