Default Easy washing machine engine info

At yesterday's Woodsboro, MD auction I purchased a 1928 4-stroke Easy washing machine engine. Cute little engine but I know nothing about it. It's battery and coil, valves are free, and it seems to have great compression.

Any information on this engine anyone would be willing to share will be greatly appreciated, especially any pictures of the original carburetor and gas tank (I'm fairly sure this one has a home made carb and I know it has a Briggs 5S gas tank).

Leanard....The mixers were very easily broken off...I have 5 easy's and only one has ther original mixer...good luck in finding one...These engines are said to be the "Smallest Production Hit and Miss engine ever built"....they dont run real slow and are quite radical when running...I think they should have been throttle governed...they would run much nicer...maybe under the load of the washer they ran better.....Nice find, Good luck with your new toy

By the way Leonard...I have never seen one that is original with bat & coil set up..all the easys I have seen have the mag under the flywheel like a briggs or maytag...If my mind serves me right...the mags are made by WICO...

I'll try to attach a picture. I haven't had a chance to look under the shroud to see if there is any kind of mag left under there.

Leonard...it also looks like someone has added another flywheel to the original, out side the shroud...probably to get it to run slower...however I might be leery of that because there is only one main bearing in these engines...the other end of the crank "flops in the wind"...
just seems like it might be too much on the flywheel side of the crank...
You be the judge when you open it up and see what I mean...
Very nice find, Mark Congden

You should of told someone with the auction who you where. I think I can find the history on where it came from.
I was one of the handlers, the one with the black pants and the only one with a white shirt
Thanks for coming to the sale. Did you buy anything else?
Mike

I do know that the engine hung upside down on the washing machine from the way it is on the board.

Since we are on the topic of easy washing machine engines I have a question. I picked one up a few years ago and I can't find a tag no nothing on it. Not even a place for one. The flywheel and blower shroud are both brass. Of course the mixer and fuel tank are both gone. I figured I would modify a Briggs WM carb in the future for it. There was also a priming cup located in the exhaust port. There are a few interesting things about these engines. How is it posible to date these engines without a name plate or serial #? Just wondering.

Kelly,

Last week, after looking for one for many years I was able to purchase 2 Easy Washing Machine engines, one has the brass shroud & flywheel (like yours) and a later one with a pot metal flywheel and aluminum shroud. The later engine has a tag with a serial number on it, but the earlier one does not. It does have a serial number stamped into the block above where a tag must have been at one time. There is 1 rivet in the block and another one appears to be cut off. I am going to be posting pictures of these in another thread. Today while working on the later engine, I took off the flywheel and mag plate and found what I think was a date of mfg casting mark. This mark is 9-9-29. I have not taken the flywheel or mag plate off of the earlier engine so I am sure if this is also on the earlier model .Has anyone found a similar mark ?

~ Jonathan
