Howdy neighbour . I guess you've got a Type "2", 4 1/2 hp Massey there ? Standard stationary engine red for M-H engines is 018D (Dupont). I haven't found anything to say that the Type 1's & 2's were painted different reds. Hope this helps. Later....

Hey Andrew, how's it going. It's Kyle's Dad Andrew(Drew) Took the gray all apart again now tha twe know it runs and kyle and I are getting ready to paint it and fix some bearing issues before show season.

As for Kyle's massey, it is his first engine, he restored it about 4 years ago, and has had it at Milton show every year since. It was his first attempt, and now he wants to redo what he is not happy with.

The engine is a Massey type R. Thanks for the paint code, bets are that he'll have his painted before the gray gets done. LOL.

Andrew.

Hi Drew. Did you fellas find a serial number for your Gray yet ?
That Dupont code, 018D, is what I've always been told is the M-H colour code for red. If you can't get it, the substitute is 674DH. You know, right after I posted before about the Massey, I recalled that you had the Cushman. So, you've got a 4 hp ,eh? It should have the extended hopper then, known as the R-30. M-H sold the Cushman engines from 1936 to 1952. The approximate shipping weight on the R-30 is 285 lbs. Did you have traces of original paint on it ? I've noticed that some fellas paint the Cushman Massey's green or grey as if they WERE Cushman's. If you decide to go that route, the Dupont grey is 32565 & the green is 7498. I think the Cushman's shipped to Massey were green & it was up to them to repaint them. I'd check to make sure your R-30 isn't supposed to be green before painting it Massey red (although it is the better colour ). Later.....

Never found a serial number on it. Looked all the areas that you suggested with no lick. Did find a couple of casting numbers, C19 on the flywheels and C29 on the base of the water hopper.

Drew.

Kyle: The Cushman made Massey-Harris engines (the Cub model) were painted green, rather than the gray that the Cushman Cubs were painted. I have a couple of them with original paint, M-H decal, Massey-Harris name tag, belt pulley (different than the Cushman Cub pulley), etc. Also have the literature on these engines. Jim

We are also fortunate to have picked up some reproduction literature at Cookstown show the year we bought the engine. In cleaning the engine we found evidence of both green and red paint on it. As it was sold as part of a strayer unit it may have also been repainted the sprayer manufacture's colours.
