Photo 1916 FM Z 3HP Questions

Need help with a couple of things, well actually if the truth be known, I need more help than that, but at the moment, some help with just a couple of things would help tremendously.
Igniter – beings the push rod is guided by a slot in the head there is no way to tell exactly when it fires, but it appears to me that it fires to early. If I try to retard the spark too much then the trip finger loses contact with the igniter. I have been told that there is a selection from start to run, but there is none visible to me. Any help here?
Fuel pump – there is a check valve at the bottom of the plunger. Is there another check valve in the line some place else? At the bottom of the line in the fuel tank? Does the pump need primed? How strong should the spring be that is beneath the plunger?
The picture below is not my engine, but it is the same.
Thank you
