Default Tobyhanna army generator Mdl. 701A 3KW

Aloha,
I just came across a Tobyhanna army generator mdl. # 701A 3Kw diesel generator with the sound enclosure and would like to know where I may get a manual for the engine and generator and also parts. I don't know who made the engine and it isn't running yet . All suggestions and replies will be greatly appreciated. TIA

Mahalo,

Question Re: Tobyhanna army generator Mdl. 701A 3KW

Check out https://secure.tpub-products.com/tpu...27f1ef31f17621

I downloaded .pdf versions of the manuals for my MEP-015A for a mere $3 each. Hard to beat the price...

Default "UPDATE" Tobyhanna army generator Mdl. 701A 3KW

Aloha,
I removed the top sound supressor cover and there was another ID plate mounted on the top of the control panel and I will try to post a picture of it. It is strange that they would have two different ID plates and I found out that the engine is a Onan diesel. I will try to look for any identifying numbers for the engine. TIA

The "TM" numbers on you data plate are the Training Manuel numbers.

What you have is a Model Number MEP-016B. That number will be the key reference number when researching this item.

3 kW Diesel generator. Manuals for all the MEP (Mobile Electric Power) generators are available on CD at Ebay.

Aloha,
Thanks for all the help and does the CD on ebay have the wiring diagram on it too, or is it just for the engine or both? TIA

Hi, I also have one of these generators, which I recently bought from Gov Liquidation. It was a package deal, two generators and a trailer, described as follows:
"2 each Mdl MEP-701A 3 KW diesel engine generator sets with suppression kits, Mfr unknown, Sn's T-90-135-ASK-0498 & T-90-135-ASK-0500, meters indicate 152 & 222 hours, 120/208 V 3 phase, 120/ V 3 phase, 240 V 1 phase, 120 V 1 phase, operating condition unknown, Mounted on Kasel Mfr Co Mdl M116A2 2 wheel 3/4 Ton cargo trailer chassis."
So far I've gotten one of the generators running, it starts like a charm and runs well.
The manual that I've found on line seems complete, but I haven't yet found the part that deals with switch settings, and how to wire a panel for it. There are all the controls on the individual generators, plus a separate panel with a selector switch marked gen 1, gen 2, and also seems to have a click in the switch that's not marked. Could this be "both?" If so, then I could use the paired generators to power my welder on the lower half of the welder power settings. That would be fine for welding with 1/8" 6011 rod, which is what I mainly use.
Does anyone have experience using these to power a Lincoln 225 AC "buzzbox?" It seems that military gear is often able to work above rated capacity.
My final questions are about the "convenience receptacle," the pair of 110v plugs on the panel front. So far, that's all I've been using, and have blown a couple of the 15 amp buss fuses using my Skil worm-drive saw.
Does anyone know if this "convenience receptacle" is hooked up to L1, L2.
So far, I'm only getting 104 volts at the receptacle, and the cycle counter is pegged at 68 Hz. The voltage control doesn't seem to have any effect on the voltage either on the panel gauge or measured at the receptacle. Bad rheostat?
I think that I've figured out that the "throttle" control is just for idling down, and that full governed RPM is used when actually generating, and that the governor has to be adjusted to get the correct cycles. I spent some time trying to make it work like the 60kw Detroit/Delco generators that I'm familiar with, where there's a hand-wheel that adjusts the governor to get the correct cycle count.
I'd appreciate any comments or advice.
By the way, Govliq has two of the 3kw units up for auction at Concord, NH,

So, are you saying that the two won't run together against a common load?
