Default Maytag 82 Question

I am working on a Maytag model 82 and need some info. On the air adjustment there is supposed to be a 1/8"(?) rod attached to the top of the adjustment cap, mine is missing. How is this rod attached to the cap? I cannot tell if it is soldered or threaded into it. I also need the length of this rod. There is also a friction spring (?) inside this cap that seems to be attached to the rod in some way but I cannot tell on this either. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Frank

I don't know exactly what it's supposed to be but I sweated mine in to the cap. No clue as to what a retainer is to keep the cap from backing on or off, I used a thin piece of leather stuffed in the slice to add some extra "drag" to the cap.

Thanks for the help. The friction spring (to keep the cap from turning) looks like the top of the adjustment rod (loop) and fits inside the mixer to provide the drag. The end of this looks like it goes into the adjustment rod but is inside the top portion of the cap.

Do you have a diameter and length of the adjustment rod?

Thanks,
Frank

Frank,
I used a piece of 1/8" brazing rod about 8" long for mine.

hope this helps, it may not be done as it was from the factory but it works and it looks fine to me. How are you pnning to start your 82? I put on a repro pulley and cut a slot in it for a pull rope.

Most of the guys I know just spin the flywheel over to get them going. I'll have to see how strong the spark is to see if I'll be able to do it on this one. The original pulley is missing on this one. Did it have a "V" belt pulley like the "92" or a flat belt pulley? If I have to I can make somekind of rope start winder in the shop.

Frank,
It should have a flatbelt pulley on it.

Be carefull hand starting the 82. I about ripped a finger off starting one that way. It backfired and something hooked a finger and ripped in to it pretty good. Now I use an electric drill or a rope whenever I can. I think I have a repro cast iron pulley left. Feel free to email me if you are interested.

The wire on the air cap is made of steel on the originals. You always see them in brass because they look nice that way.

Happy Maytagn'!

I've used an old or new bicyle innertube around the flat belt pulley to start an 82. It provides some friction and dosen't slip like rope will.

My model 82 has the flat belt pully. I use an old wide pants belt to start it!

Thanks for all the advise, pics and movies. This project is moving along pretty good at this point. Everything is cleaned up and the new gaskets are being made. It shouldn't be too much longer.

Thanks,
Frank
