Default International M Overstrike Ignitor

I have an international M with and overstrike ignitor. I had to replace the shaft which I have done with a piece of drill rod. It is now time to drill for the new taper pin to fasten the colar onto the shaft. When the points are in the closed position at what angle should the actual trip arm be? It looks as though it should be in the dead upright position. Is this the case?

Thanks for all the help.

CJ, I looked at several ignitors and when the points are closed the hole of the pin is about 5 degrees out of top center to the right, looking to it when the ignitor is mounted at the engine.

What came first the overstrike or the understrike?

The understrike was a single bearing igniter, used on the early 'M' engines from 1917, until early 1919. I own a 3 HP M , the 100th of the model built in early 1919, with the understrike set up. It has the brass engine tag on the crankcase. These igniters wore poorly designed, and IHC replaced them with the overstrike igniter, with 2 bearings, in mid 1919. Generally, if the engine tag is on the hopper, the engine is late 1919 or later, and has the overstrike igniter. The ignition componants between the over strike and understrike are not interchangeable. The igniter, pushrod, cam strap and the camshaft itself is engineered and profiled differently between the 2 units. When I bought my understrike, I also bought a sister engine to it, with the overstrike ignition. Both engines were purchased by a Tannery in Newark NJ. One was purchased in Jan. of 1919, and the other in July of 1920. The tannery owners had written to IHC about retro fitting the 1920 with the 1919 ignition, in 1921, as it was simpler to maintain and operate. IHC replied that to change the needed componants, it would require the above listed parts, and would cost $78.16, (Almost 1/3 the cost of a new engine!), as the parts for the 1919 ignition were no longer in production, and were becoming scarce! The tannery never changed the 1920.
