Default ignition question

I was recently at a motor show and saw a home brew ignition that I think would work on a motor I have. It appeared to be a small relay with 4 wires coming out of it. A yellow, a blue, black and white. This went to an ordinary auto coil that had a resistor across the + and - terminals. The owner showed that this device would give a spark up to an inch long. Can anyone here tell me how to build this device and what parts are needed? Thanks.
