Default LA 3-5 Gray or Red??????

I have a 3-5 LA which according to the serial number should have been all red, however there is quite a bit of gray paint on the main part of the engine and it doesnt appear to have ever been repainted. The gas tank and the flywheel have red paint on them and no gray. This engine came from a guy in Canada so could this be why it's painted differently?? Also the gas tanks where originally gray on gray engines engines right??

So I see after doing some reading in the paint shop that the dates in Wendals book are wrong, there for makeing this a gray engine. But i'm still curios about the red gas tank.

I got hold of an IHC historical web site . I sent them an email and they confirmed from the serial number that my engine was grey. I don't remember the web site name but if you google around using "IHC" you can find it.
thanks
