Does anyone remember who had the picture of an engine trailer with an "I" beam overhead that extended past the rear of the trailer ? It had one or two chain hoists hanging from it and was painted red...I think. I had a picture saved of it but somehow have either lost it or dumped it. It was a pretty small picture and I would love to find it or another one set up that way. I would like the picture to be larger than the one I used to have. I have had some health problems in the last couple of years and that trailer set up would be a big help.
Thanks. Dave. PS I searched the archives and found that the posts no longer have the pictures with them. Dave. |

Just dusting off an old thread here ! would a trailer like that require removable outriggers to lift a heavy engine or would the combined weight of the trailer and having it coupled to the tow vehicle be enough ? I am at the point where a custom engine trailer is needed and that overhead gantry would be the way to go for me !!

Assuming that the I-Beam only extends a few feet past the end of the trailer a couple simple old car jacks (bumper jack or scissor jack) at the back end of the trailer should be enough.
Shouldn't need any fancy outriggers if you're not dangling heavy loads off the side of the trailer. There's an old Dodge 1ton dually around Northern Illinois / Southern Wisconsin with a similar setup bolted into the truck box. I've seen it at a few auctions loading engines in the back without waiting for someone to come along with a loader tractor. Makes it a lot easier loading heavy engines that aren't on carts. |

If your close to a military post you may find a military surplus sale that has something ready made for you. When I was in the Army we had a few 2 1/2 ton trucks with a factory made setup like that. It bolted right to the bed and worked great. Maybe a search of Defense reutilization and marketing office (DRMO) would get you the auction lists. I'll try to play around today at lunch and see if I can find anything too.

I guess outriggers was not the most accurate term, I should have said "back riggers". I am in Canada too...we dont have Military auctions...unfortunately our soldiers are stuck using old stuff
I guess a simple calculation of weight/radius and looking at the tipping point would answer my own question
