I have a 028 WB that I bought in 1981 and have not used in quite a while. Also, I have misplaced the manuel. What is the correct mix?
The dealer handed me a six pack of 50/1 oil and said use it in all Stihl engines. That may be true but I don't believe that was the mix specified for my saw at the time. Does anyone have a manuel for Stihl engines in that time period? I sure would appreciate having it verified from a reliable source. Thanks again for your help and opinions

50:1---for most every thing now...chain saws 50:1... 68 hodaka, 50:1, early 60s ohlson rice engine 50:1 most every two stroke 50:1...maytags are an exception...the crank shafts were not hardened (like newer cranks), they are more likely to wear out than a newer engine...they run higher oil to gas ratio. the new oil does the job of the old stuff but requires less.
hope this helps Mac Leod |

If you only want to keep it a few years, use the 50:1 mix. The older Sthil saws used 40:1 which is still minimal oiling. Most machines are built with a specific lifetime built in. It is called PROGRAMMED OBSOLESCENSE. It (the machine) is designed to fail after a given period of use, so you (the customer) have to replace that item after a set period of time. We had a big discussion on this on the stak a while ago. A prime example of this programmed obsolescense is the sears lawnmowers. They are designed to be relatively trouble free for 2 years, and to be replaced in 3, no later than 4 years time. after the 2nd year, engine componants (ignition coil, plastic governer will fail, and afterb the 3rd year, severe rust will usually do in the mower deck. These failures are designed into the machine
! After all, why would you buy a new mower. if your old one still worked The same goes for most of your 2 cycle engines. The manufacturers give you minimal oiling requirements, and the machines only last for about 2 years for a home owner (Ever read the fine print on a mower from sears - NO commercial use warrenty! They know that the machine will wear faster under commercial usage!} Most 2 cycle machines will be burnt out after 2 years, if you follow oiling instructions from the factory. I have been running my machines, requiring 32:1 at 16:1, and the 49:1 and 50:1 at a 32:1 ratio, and they have run with in mechanical problems for many years. I finally had to toss my sears yard blower after 18 years, because the housing parts were no longer available. The engine still ran strong! 2 neighbors who had the same machines burned the engines out within 18 months, using the factory ratios. As for the Maytags, The stak had a big go round about 16 months ago - I would use the 16:1 ratio is calls for, and do not use the synthetic oils. They are not designed for low speed engines, or plain soft bronze bearings.Andrew

I just looked up your Chain Saw, and it calls for 40:1 Gas Oil Mix. Here is a link to a Web Site for the question that you have about your Chain Saw. Hope this helps. Bruce. |

In 1985 the quality of the oil available required you to mix it at 40:1, just like my old Power Products engine from the 1950's specifies 16:1 using 30wt motor oil. That was then, today you can run STIHL Ultra at 50:1 in the 028 with no worries. But I do run my old saws a little bit richer than that.

Buy good oil and mix it according to the oil instructions. Some of the new synthetic oils call for 100-1 or less. They don't smoke and they run fine. However, my preference is go to a motorcycle shop and buy a quart of Suzuki CCI 2 stroke premix oil. Mix it somewhere between 32-1 and 40-1. Use it everything you have that is two stroke.
