Default Sources for babbit

My husband (Jamie) and I are the proud owners of a 15 hp Reid engine. We are getting very ready to hear it run. One problem--we have to pour a new main bearing. Can anyone suggest a good supplier? Here in Ontario we have found a few that want to sell 250 lbs as a minimum order, that would be more than enough. We will be going to Coolspring show next week. We would appreciate any help.

Thanking in advance
Sharon

Try A1 Babbitt Co. in Donora, PA. As I recall brand new ASTM #2 tin-based babbitt (the good stuff) was 5 something bucks a pound plus ship. Nice place to deal with for small quanities. I usually but 10-20 lbs at a time. http://www.a1babbitt.com/home.html

Call a scrap yard and ask them if they have any "yard babbitt" around.
Last time I bought it I got 300 lbs. @ $2/lb. and it was all high speed (REALLY GOOD) babbitt.....

Hi Sharon,
Well, you could have let me know you needed some & I would've picked you some up at the Portland swap meet while I was down there . A couple of the antique car guys up at the Barrie flea last weekend had some bricks as well. It's the Paris show this weekend too...maybe someone will have some there for you or they'll know someone who can get you some quick. Say 'hi' to Jamie for me .

-Andrew....

Hi Sharon,

Just scanning through the sight and noticed you inquiry.

Depending upon how much babbit you're looking for, you might contact Dave Stirk. Don't know if he has any left from when he poured the bearings for the Sawyer Massey refit, but it's a possible source.

If you do happen to find some, we (Georgian Bay) are in need of some to re-babbit the stone crusher....................it's in bad need of new bearings.

Hope this is of some help.

Looking forward to seeing you, Jamie, and family in Cookstown for the 40th anniversary celebrations.
