Default Termaat and Monahan

Help! I need information on the operation of the cooling system of a 1HP Termaat and Monahan marine engine. This engine has a water tube running thru the muffler and either it has a rust hole thru it or the factoy drilled a 1/16th inch hole in the pipe to create some steam to help the exhaust exit. If anybody has any experience with these engines please let me know. Thanks.

Exclamation Re: Termaat and Monahan

Your T&M has an exhaust enrichment system designed and patented by Benjamine Middleditch. The cooling system pump is timed to force water thru the engine as the exhaust port is open. When the engine exhausts its charge, a small amount of water is sprayed into the exhaust stream, thus cooling it. This cooling action helps the engine scavenge the burnt gasses from the engine. A small amount of water also enters the cylender and is compressed with the next fuel-air charge. This helps cool the charge, and prevent detonation, and the water vapor is converted to fuel when the charge is lit by the ignition, adding to the power the engine produces. On the early engines, there was no adjustment to the water charger, and at very low idle, the water tended to back up into the exhaust port, causing serious problems. At normal idle, and higher running speeds, the system did as designed, and well! This feature was found on all of Benjamine Middleditch designed marine engines!
