Couple of questions on the old JD corn shellers. Does anybody have a good definative layout of the decals and where the decals can be purchased? Also, in the picture, there is a slot below the cob exit chute...what is that for? I have seen many shellers with this slot but never anything in the slot. It points downward at about 45 degrees and is angled towards the lower opening where the kernels exit. I have a chance to pick one of these shellers up and would just like to know a little more information about some of the features. Also, anybody know where I might be able to pick up a flat belt pulley for one?

Keep checking ebay someone sells copies of the parts manual for the JD sheller which will help in locating a belt pulley for it if you know the part number, the manual may also show the layout of the decals. Search google for JD decals and there are a couple of sources. Isn't that slot for the fan to help clean the corn when its shelled?? I'M STILL LOOKING FOR PARTS FOR MY JD#2 SHELLER .

I believe that slot is for the Corn Chaf and dust that the blower will push out there....

I restored a 1B, I have 2 photos of it in the photo gallery under Andrew Albrecht. I used red paint because thats what was on my original galvinized sheet metal and i do not believe it was ever restored befor me. I asked John Deere Co. about the red but they could not tell me for sure if they ever did that. but i have strong feelings that mine was original. What i did was found the Type size and Font on my computer from a Microsoft word program. The letters came out so close to being just like the original ones. Then i printed it and went to a sign shop and had them make me the negative of the letters. In other words, the sicky back material without the stickiy letters. I appied this to the sheet metal and spray painted the area of the letters red. When it was dry i peeled off the surounding sticky material. This gave me an original painted logo and pat. number. Its more work but as you can see from my photos a nicer job. I have a copy of the patent of the sheller but it does not show the flat belt pulley. I will look at mine and see if i can get the part number for you. Hope this helps.

the slot is the discharge for the fan and remember to cross the belt or the fan will run backwards

Yeah, i can remember to cross the fan belt. The 24" Meadows mill that I used to run was set up the same way with the crossed round belt. I appreciate the help. Now, i Just need to find one of those funky 3 spoked bolt-on pulleys to hook the flat belt up to. If I don't, i'll have to get some 2" wide belt and run it over the big flywheel as well as the flywheel on my engine and that just wouldn't look quite right :-p In the event that I would have to make a pulley for it, what's the diameter? Thanks!

Jeb, I think you can still get a parts book for the 1,1A,1B shellers at your local JD store, part# PC155. The pulley was 3" wideX10" in dia. part #6490C or J14686C,and bolted to the balance wheel or flywheel. good luck John

I've got a 1a and am going to use it to shell some seed corn this year. It seems the fan is missing. I have no idea what to look for to replace it. Is it a squirrel cage? Any ideas for a makeshift type thing until I can replace it?
Thanks, Brad Bachelor |

I'd appreciate any dimensions I can get. Can I get by with the shaft sticking through the ounting brackets, withsome sheet metal welded to it for the blower? I am mainly wanting to put the sheller to work right now and it doesn't have to be restored. Although, I don't want to mess it up so I can restore it in the future.
Thanks, Brad |

I have a parts 1-A that has the fan. I do not have the larger pulley that is behind the flywheel. If you just need the fan assembly and brackets I can supply that.

I am new to this board, but have subscribed to Farm Collector for about a year. About 20 years ago I restored my grandfathers No. 2. I talked to someone in John Deere's archives and he said that due to the fly wheel part number 4274C, it was made the first year, 1915. He sent me a photo copy of the parts manual. It has all the parts and the dimensions for the wood pieces. This was a great help reproducing the wood parts. If anyone is interested in a copy let me know. I am in need of 4259C which is the sprocket for the cob rake. Thanks, Byron

Well, i'm kinda surprised this thread keeps coming back to the top...I posted it a long time ago and have since bought, restored, and have shown several times my IHC 1 hole all steel sheller with hand crank (ratchet type) and optional belt pulley. I guess I don't need any info on the JD sheller anymore (a friend had one that I was trying to buy, but I moved to another state and then found the IHC).
It seems that the two things which are almost invariably missing are the hand crank and the feeder tray. At least the trays for the JD models are being reproduced as you can find them on ebay pretty regularly. Hand cranks are less easy to find. Almost seems like you end up having to buy a parts machine if you need parts. I have what's left of the blower fan from an IHC 2-hole all steel sheller as well as the seed corn tipper from that unit as well. Not much else on that unit worth salvaging but if someone needs a part, let me know and i'll see if I have it. I also have an original owners manual for the 1 hole sheller, a parts manual covering several shellers, and an original operators manual for a Type B 8" feed grinder (which I also have). Interesting that the 2 hole sheller had a shelled corn sacking elevator which I am salvaging and am going to restore and use it to carry the shelled corn from my 1-hole sheller and dump it into the hopper of the feed grinder so i'll have a nice 3-piece IHC combo outfit! Gonna be sweet as pie when it's all done! Jeb |
