I beleive that I have read somewhere that they were also used as sump pumps for evacuating basements and also filling cisterns. Pretty much, a water pump is just a water pump.

Tey were used to pump all kind of liquids:warm or cold water, oil, kerosene, gasoline, caustics in agricultural and industrial applications. Some applications required different internal parts.

My understanding is that meyers piston pumps are still used all over the country especially for municipalities supplying water from rivers, lakes etc. through their filtering proccess. I have a 1921, 900 series, 4x5 in my basement and pump from a ground water well to keep the lawn green. I rebuilt the leather cup piston in 1997 and this thing has been a work horse. All the parts are still made and supplied by T&T Machine Co. in Fairmont West Virginia. 26554. 304-366-1300. There is a fellow named Gary ? who works there who is an absolute expert on any part of these pumps and he is who told me about these pumps still being very popular. T&T bought the patent rights to the 900 and the newer series, maybe the 902? Their parts list shows special parts for handling Hot Water, Oil, Kerosene and Gasoline.

I pulled my pump apart only to find the piston is still in good shape. I have been having problems since our water table here in Colorado Springs is down about 5 ft. from normal and have been getting alot of air in the system and then it quits pumping with the draw pipe well below water. So I've been looking around the inet for advice. I think I found my answer over on Contractor Talk on a post about the correct pitch on a draw pipe for a jet pump. Seems an air pocket in the draw pipe can be a problem and with the water being lower to get at the problem started to show. I won't know for sure until I get it back together, (I'll put a new piston in since it is apart anyway). One thing I'm curious about is that even though the leathers look in perfect shape the aluminum bucket plates that hold the leather show quite a bit of corrosion. I don't think it is enough to affect the operation at this point but am wondering what would cause that corrosion. I'm thinking it might be the lawn fertilizer getting down into the shallow well. I'll have to ask Gary @ T&T's the next time I talk to him.
Hope that answers some questions on the myers bulldozer pump. Rob T. Colorado Springs. |

Ouch, just got the bill for the piston parts. I don't remember them being so much back in 1997. $350 for leathers, bucket plates, and new nuts. Oh well it needs to be put back together. RT.

Seems like gas was about 1.00 back then too!

So it turns out my pump problem was with the packing leathers around the piston rod. The leathers were a couple of bucks. RT.
