Question Spark retarding on a F&J K series engine

I can't seem to figure out how the timing for F&J series K engines is retarded for starting. Maybe I'm missing some parts that aid in starting or maybe not. Any suggestions?

Forrest

What size model K do you have? 3, 5 and 7hp have no spark retard nor are they needed. 9, 12, 15, 20 and 25hp have a spark retard built into the ignitor trip finger carrier. Ignitor should snap 18° BTDC when SNAP mark on flywheel rim is centered with pushrod.

It's a 15 HP and if the spark is set per the manual (6 deg. BTDC) it will take your arm off every time it comes up on compression and fires, when it kicks back.

Well... I have never messed with a 15 Hp But.... On the 9 and 12 HP there is a little L Shaped rod sticking out of the Igniter Pawl carrier and you have to turn this to retard the spark.... But... After some wear the dimples in it get worn and turning the rod will have No effect. So you have to Build it up in the right places so it changes the time the igniter will trip. Maybe someone has changed this or replaced it with a bolt or an improper part...

I geuss I could post a Pic of it if you would like.... Probably the 15 to 25 HP would have something similar I would geuss...

According to my 15-25K parts list these engines have the same ignitor trip carrier with early/late starting lever. As Ken mentioned sometimes this rod gets a dimple worn in it, then it don't work as intended. Lever is only a length of 1/4 rod with a few holes drilled for pins and a flat milled on one side.
