Default Help Needed on Little Major

I picked up this small engine today in a swap. Worked hard on cleaning the carb, oiler and mag and was able to get it started. My question is: there is a place for the muffler to go on the top of the head like it should. About four inches below it there is another spot that has been machined for another pipe of some kind with what looks like a tin plate with some small holes in it. When I roll the piston over you can see the piston come flush with the hole. Ok, so here the problem, When I got it running it vented it's exhaust out the bottom hole instead of out the muffler. I took the muffler off and it looked clean all the way to the exhaust vavle which seems to be working just fine.

It's a nice little engine but this one has me confused. Also, how does the rod bearing get it's oil as there dosent seem to be any way for it to get any oil. The only drip oiler is the one for the piston.

Thank you,
Will

Will: Thats a ported exhaust engine and the muffler belongs on the side port. As for the oil, if I remember right, I belive it's splashed up from the crankcase. A neat little engine, I used to own one awhile back.
