Angry IHC M won't start

I have had this 6hp--{M} for a couple years--older resto-[paint job]--Mag-and overstrike igniter---no way will it start--it has spark at the igniter---i checked with the igniter out and grounded--flipping while my friend--[very tired] cranked it--I think I generally know what to do--but not this time--
any help--??? I have a similar problem with a 6hp Galloway,

Yes.... You have proved there is voltage at the igniter.... BUT is it there at the right time....???? Any engine with a low tension igniter and rotary low tension mag MUST have the Mag timed to the igniter.... There is a narrow window where the voltage is at peak and the igniter must snap at that point.. On the type M there are lines on the mag shaft and the outer bearing and they must line up when the igniter trips....

Thanks--I will ck the line up on the mag--then might belt it up ? What about the galloway 6hp--with a igniter and webster-it won;t run either--sparks on the bench--but no start up. good compression--and on time,

It's as Ken says, the timing of the mag and the ignitor is the most important thing for a good spark at the right time. See my timing page at:
http://www.oldengine.org/members/ham...gsettingsM.htm

But to be sure that your mag is in good order start the engine first on a battery and coil, that way you will always have a strong current and spark.

Second, check that there is a fuel mix in the carb, onces I had everything that was needed to start a six horse M, but I had to use my granny's glasses to see that little piece of dirt that sticks in the sprayer hole of the venturi tube.

When you have the engine running, you could switch it over to the mag and see if she can do the job. My experience is to set the needle valve at 10 o'clock, that's enough for first start.

d,j,: If all else fails and it's set up right, try "FRESH" gas

Exclamation Re: IH---[M] won;t start

Last but not least-is the igniter wet with fuel? The new gasoline will carry current under compression. You will get spark out of the engine, but not under compression! Clean off all carbon with electrical cleaner, or carb cleaner, and dry thoroughly. Tune the engine over with the igniter out to dry out the cylender. Especially with igniter engines, make sure you have fresh gas. Gas sitting in an open container loses 50% of its burning ability in 30 days, within 2 months, it probably will not burn!
