Smile WOO HOO! Homelite Saw Runs!

It's been sitting on my bench for almost a year now. I was done fixing a little mistake that occured at a show (Busted starter rope). I thought to myself that I should put this saw (a Homelite Model 20 MCS) back together in order to get it off my bench. I had been having a no spark condition with it and I had just about had it. Something sparked in my brain to try a different spark plug !!! Hmmm...Wow...look at that big spark! I called Napa and got the right plug, put it back together and with some carb cleaner, got it started!!!!! Played with the carb a little and it was actually running well! Woo Hoo!!!!1

made my day!!!

Thumbs down Re: WOO HOO! Homelite Saw Runs!!!!!!

YOU DID WHAT? NEVER NEVER use carb cleaner or Ether to start a 2 stroke, especially chainsaws and blowers! This stuff is lethal to engine internals, especially to bearings and pistons. It destroys the already minimal lubrication inside the engine, and can literally burn the engine out within seconds! Carb cleaner will also ruin the crankshaft seals on older engines. If you must prime a 2 stroke, a little gas with some oil in it is the safest way! I hate seeing perfectly good engines ruined.

I saw a huskavarna chain saw that had ether used one time...the bore was in good enough condition to use again but the piston was shot...and pistons are not cheap-on my ohlsson rice, starting was a pain because the carby was so gummed up so I took a little oil can with a very small hole- filled it up with gas mix and would shoot it down the intake...worked fine.

I refuse to use ether in anything other than a diesel designed for it in cold weather. As to the carb cleaner, it doesn't hurt bearings when it is shot in the plug hole, especially when you put a whole bunch of oil in the intake because the motor has sat for 10 years and oiled the bearings with an oil can for the same reason. When I am running 16:1, I really don't worry too much on a cast iron 2 stroke. Alum engnes I know better. It gave a HUGE cloud of blue smoke, makes no unusual noises, no unusual and now starts on the first pull every time. This is one perfectly good engine that was NOT ruined!

BTW- It cuts good too!
