Red face Just bought first engine...NEED HELP!

First off Hello to everyone.
I just picked up a IHC -M The serial number is 42897 gas/kero mixer.
Problem missing Mag and ignitor. When was this engine made and what Mag do I need to look for? Same for ignitor?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks Woody

Hey Woody,
my guess is your engine is approx early to mid 1922( see also http://www.oldiron-nut.com/ihc-numbers/ )

As for the ignitor and mag my suggestions would be firstly have a look at harrys original pages there is a great section on ignitors and low tenshion ignition (this really helped me out with my first lgnitor engine) how they work etc.

Then have a look at Ted Brookovers home page as it has a really good list of ignitors and pics, I also believe Ted sells ignitors I have never bought one from him, so I have no idea what he sells them (if at all) for?

Also have a talk to Hit n Miss Enterprises and guys like that they may be able to help. Teds and Hit n Miss links are in Harrys Sponsor pages you will also see some other guys who do similar..... my advice send emails to all of them!!!!

Hope this helps,
Roo

Woody, it depends on what engine you have a 1˝ hp or a 3 hp M. It's stamped on the tag.
1˝ hp flywheel dia is 18" by 1 3/4"face.
3 hp flywheel dia is 21" by 2 3/8"face.

1˝ hp with serial # A42897 is 1920.
3 hp with serial # B42897 is 1922.

They both need the same mags and ignitors. For the mag the type "L" and for the ignitor the overstrike type part # 8784T (complete).

Hope it's of any help for ya.

The only that i would add to what john said is that the gear on the magneto is two different sizes i don't know how many teeth are on what but the 1 1/2 hp is smaller than the 3 hp gear. John would know and i'm sure he just overlooked this from where i stand john is a real authority on Intl M engines.

Chuck you made me shy, but you are allright. I was only thinking for the mags, here is the difference:

For the 1˝ hp M with IHC mag 30 teeth, part # 9679T.
The 3 hp M with IHC mag 36 teeth, part # 9779T.
