I had a oroblem with the gib key working loose on a small engine that I had. I could drive it in tight and after the engine ran a while the key would be loose again. It turned out the problem was the fact that the key was a little too long and about the same time it was getting hard to drive in enough to hold the flywheel tight it was reaching the end of the machined keyway of the crankshaft. So, it was bottoming out before it was really tight enough to tighten up on the flywheel itself. Sawed about 3/8" off the end of the key and solved the problem. I just thought this might help someone in the future haveing a problem such as this when a wheel won't stay tight. Joe Morris

Make sure your flywheel hub isnt cracked, a wobbled out keyway will let them work loose also!

Go to this link. It will make you want to check every thing over before you start up the old motor again.

Intresting to see that the engine which has blown itself apart under the title reg ingold, has paint covering alot of the fractures on the casting, Meaning they where there before he started it, never take any risks with castings, go over them with a fine tooth comb before painting them.
