Yes this is a scam. I get it about once a month. I don't respond to anything like this and nothing regarding my ebaystatus has ever changed. If you didn't initiate some request I'd ignore it.

Hi MArk,
thanks so much for your prompt response. I notified ebay and also changed my password since I stupidly signed in through the email. Thanks so much, Roo |

Man, questions about eBay scams get asked so often, I think Smokstak needs a permanent banner that reads "spoof@ebay.com" and "spoof@paypal.com" !
WHENEVER you're unsure about an eBay or PayPal e-mail, just forward it to the appropriate address. Btw, eBay has initiated a policy whereby it sends a copy of any legitimate message it has sent you to your My eBay Messages inbox as well. Plus, I would always be suspicious of a message from eBay that has "temporary" limited your access to sensitive features . Myself, I'm "temporarily" curious as to what a sensitive feature is ! One small thing to remember is that most scams and phishing emails are in HTML, while genuine PayPal and Ebay notices are in plain text.
We use 'Agent' for email and newsreading, which is a 'plain text' programme and doesn't open or display HTML at all, so it's fairly quickly obvious what are genuine and what are not. Most times the actual destination site url is outlined if you look through the message, often ending in .ru for Romania or .kr for Korea. Remember also that both Ebay and PayPal will NEVER ask for your password or other information by email, you always have to log in. Peter |

One bit of information you can use to determine if an e-mail message actually came from eBay without even opening the message is to simply look at the time it was received. Ebay is located in the Pacific Time Zone of the USA - which is GMT -8 (or -7 while in Daylight Saving Time). If you get a message that has tomorrows date on it, it probably came from Asia.
- However, since this thread was initiated by ROO, any genuine message you get from eBay will have yesterday's date on it. If it has your current date, then you should be suspicious. Last edited by John Newman, Jr.; 09-25-2005 at 12:09 PM. |
