While I have no way of knowing what system your computer is running, or what individual programs you have to work with, Here is how I got mine to work (after fumbling around and finally getting what I wanted purely by dumb luck)
Open the picture you want to use. Hopefully it will open with "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" At the bottom of the screen will be a row of icons. On mine, the second icon from the right end will, if you hold the curser over it, say "Closes this program and opens the image for editing (Ctrl+E)". So either click on this icon, or press & hold Ctrl and then the "E" key. This should then open "Microsoft Photo Editor". At the top of the screen you should find "Image" Click this and a menu will drop down offering, among other things, "Resize". Click that and you get a box showing the width and height of your picture in "Pixels". In both the width and the height box, there are up & down arrows. Click the down arrow in either box until your picture size is no more than 80 X 80. Adjusting one will change the other proportionatly. The picture I was working with as reference while writing this ended up as 57 X 80. You could, as an alternate method once you are at this point, click on the larger of the 2 dimensions and "Backspace" the current number out, then enter 80 and press "Enter" and the other will change to the appropriate relative number. Click "OK" and your picture is now sized appropriately for use as an avatar. When you close this window it will ask if you want to save the changes to your picture. Say yes. I BELIEVE Harry will only allow avatars for subscribers.
Gotta do SOMETHING to increase the SUBSCRIBER/Registered ratio around here...................which, currently stands at 2,612 Registered vs. 192 Subscribers |

I was able to put my avatar on before I became a subscriber (which was just the other day). You will find the link for editing (or adding) an avatar on the "Edit Profile" page. I still haven't been able to find a quick way to get there, but if you go the the FAQ page and search "edit profile" it will give you a link in the related questions / answers.

Looks like I was not entirely correct - I have been informed that avatars are reserved for subscribers.
What does subscribing get you? Well, first off - you get to post an avatar! On a grander scale, you get the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to insure that this wonderful and diverse site stays up and running. As Harry sez - "...think of it as a magazine subscription...". By subscribing you allow that magazine to be able to afford to bring you the articles, photos and tech tips that are of interest to you. I don't know of any other site that caters to as many different aspects of the old engine world as this one. Just look at the list of forums available and its redily apparent that you can discuss specialized topics with knowledgable people on the subject of your choice. I am a machinist by trade. I am fortunate enough to have a couple of machines of my own and enjoy working with them for my personal projects. There is a forum for that. I occasionally build model engines. That is covered too. My main engine focus is antique lawnmower type engines. Several of these are generator units. Over the course of time I have acquired an antique boat engine plus a handful of outboard motors. Each of the forums that address these subjects has provided me with valuable information in addition to enjoyable 'conversation' with others who share my interests. I will now step down off of my soap box..... |

Subscribing (sending Harry a pittance) gets you 6 megs of photo space....NOT including your Gallery space.
24/7 access to the best old iron site on the net, which you are getting FREE even if you aren't a subscriber.....but MOST IMPORTANTLY.....it KEEPS this site going! Here are the complete details: http://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18349 What would you do if Harry said "the HECK with this" and took it DOWN? I'd give up every magazine subscription I've ever HAD before I'd give THIS up. Just for the record, I AM a moderator here (THE mod.....apparently) for which I am HANDSOMELY paid!!! And Harry, if you edit this post I QUIT!!! .......................... ![]() You may support this site here: Harry Matthews P.O.
