Default GAS PRICES - Great American Rip Off

I just received a call from my Brother-In-Law saying they where rationing gas on his side of town.I had to go to the local Wally World and stopped and filled up my truck and sure enough they had a twenty dollar max on top of going up 23 cents from the Hurricane.Anybody else having this to happen to them? This will put a damper on going to shows.

I don't know about rations, but regular shot up 50-60 cents per gallon in Dayton. I saw one station held at $2.59, the rest were $2.99-3.09. The sherriff was directing traffic because everyone wanted to get "cheap" gas. I hope they don't start rationing because the gas gauge doesn't work in my truck; I always fill it up and then keep track of the mileage. What can you do? You still have to drive to get to work to pay for the gas.

Gas up here is 2.99 a gallon, this is just the beginning of the end, this is going to snowball, like you have never seen before! before this weather, all boils down to not having bigger production plants & storage/ reservses, we all knew it was going to happen. soon then later, just filled my gas all my gas cans monday, 35 gallons at 2.58 a gallon, this may last for 2 week maybe 3.

But still have to go to work! & pay more bills, still going to one more show, local, then thats it.

I didn't think I would see the day where gas would be 3 dollars a gallon, I just went by a couple stations 2.99 for 87 and 3.00+ for 89 here in MA, I heard that the gas station at the Stop and Shop had gas for $2.49 yesterday, the lines were super long and Police officers were directing traffic there. Times like this make wonder why I sold the two mopeds I had a couple years ago, I should have kept one. Our country has to do something about this, enough is enough what's next 4 and 5 dollar gas? we have to either drill more or take over some oil wells in the middle east. I am not saying this to offend anyone but we need to take action and fast before gas is so expensive no one can afford to go anywhere.
my thoughts

You're right but, its mostly because we can not refine it fast enough to supply the usa. plain and simple, now with the weather here we go. later

Even though we could, the world would not let us just "takeover" some wells in the middle east, so the answer is drill more here and build bigger refineries. Unfortunatly we are pretty well screwed since that will take years to accomplish assuming the environmental whackos let us do it. What bugs me is that last night the gas was $2.68 and today the same pump is $3.09. Since the station has not recieved a fresh delivery how do they justify the increase- its the same gas! That is pure price gouging! Oh well, when you start to feel sorry for yourself about the prices just take a look at the news and see what those people down south a going through. My God what a mess! I'll bet the price of gas is the last thing on their minds and by comparison things are looking pretty darn good here in Ohio.

It is pure price goughging. The gas stations are making huge profits. Every time they raise the price 10 cents a gallon that 10,000 gallons in the tank gives them $1,000 pure profit, 30 cents a gallon, do the math. Prices quoted most time are for futures, oil that is still in the ground, not even on the boat or at a refinery. Oil companies reported record profits of 30 to 50% profit over last years record profits. One local station owner was on TV saying he does not set the price per gallon, it comes from higher up the chain. We have our local show in 3 weeks, The Gathering Of The Orange and expect exhibitors from far away and I wonder how it will affect our show. Had enough.

Your right chrisc, Ohio is looking pretty darn good, but you know the local gas stations have been putting the screws to us, wooster, ashland, mansfield Ohio, before this all started, just look over at Canton, or Beaver Dam area always 25 cents difference everytime, but not now everyone is high! later

Being mad at the service station for "gouging" is misdirected. The gas in their tanks doesn't belong to them, it belongs to the oil company. The price is set by the oil company and the gas stations owners (who are only payed a few cents per gallon for delivery to you) are forced to go along.

There was an instance a dozen or so years back near here where a gas station owner refused to increase his prices-- it worked for a day or so ...Then the petroleum company padlocked his pumps. IIRC he was also charged with theft.

As Mark Twain said about land - "The price is going to go up because they ain't making it anymore".

Same thing for oil. With China becoming a major oil importer and the U.S. driving gas hogs and not wanting to conserve and the EPA requiring all these regionalized exotic blends (taxing the refining capacity), it's no wonder prices are skyrocketing.

With our consumption so high and the loss of the Gulf reserves, we're starting to see them chickens come home to roost.

The good news is that the prices won't stay up for too awful long. Once the oil production is back and refineries are back online prices will moderate.

If you REALLY want to see prices go down, convince everyone to get cars that get 40+ MPG and then don't drive unnecessarily. All of a sudden the pipelines will back-up and prices will go down.

That's my uneducated opinion and I'm proud of it!

Take care - Elden

The reason a gas station will raise the price BEFORE the next delivery of higher price gasoline. Is becasue the station wants to have the money to cover the price increase for the NEXT truckload. Otherwise the station will be caught short with every price increase. Ask youself what would you do, eat every price increase or pass it on immediately.

The answer is so simple, develope aternatives. Forget bashing big cars or oil companies. We have oil in alaska just sitting. We have coal that can be gasified and liquified. We can also build nukes, then electric will becomes an alternative. Instead electric rates are also on the rise.

I'd rather talk about old iron,....

Hydrogen powered vehicles, that's a good alternative to the mess we have today! We've had how many experiences with OPEC "cutting production" and yet we still develop gasoline fueled cars. Our government is letting us get ripped off. It's something we all need to speak up about. Write your congressman/woman. Tell them you want alternative fuel. We spend billions of dollars on space exploration and relief aid to the entire world but our on economy and tax payers suffer because our government refuses to develop an alternative fuel system! We need to drive less and complain more to the people who we elect. Don't kid yourselves, they want to stay in office and they'll listen if enough of us complain.

Ok, enough of that depressing crap... let's talk old iron!

Lightbulb this bothers me about fuel production

If they cant refine enough gas (so were told) why do they keep refining high octane like 91 or 93. and not go with one type. personally i always thought high test/primium was a joke, untill you get to racing fuel like 109 etc.
What i am saying here is like russia in world wars I and II they stayed with one basic rifle and caliber they did not try to build several as they were on the ropes badly at that time.

Allen, thanks, I was wondering if I was the only one that knew that.

Ask The User,
You need to look at were hydrogen comes from. It is made from natural gas and that is already in limited supply. Making it from water is very inefficient and would require absolutely huge amounts of energy that could only come from oil or nuclear power. The only good way to store large volumes of hydrogen is as a hydrocarbon, gasoline, there is something like 3 times as much hydrogen in a gallon of gasoline as there is in a gallon of liquid hydrogen. Hydrogen is mainly a scam for research grant money it has very limited real world use.
All those billions spent on space exploration is the only thing short of very strict population control, that can give your great great grandchildren any kind of meaningful life. Space is last place left where there is energy, resources, and the room to be free, and it’s a long shot.

At least that’s the way I see it.

Just went by my local station and about 40 cars in line and the price has gone up 40 cents a gallon today.I have always thought it was the big oil companys that causes all the shortages and high prices, back in the winter they blamed it on the cold and a high demand for home heating oil and now they are making there huge profits on gas.
