Default Economy hopper drain

I recently purchased a 1 1/2 hp Economy and while cleaning it up a bit I unscrewed the petcock from the hopper and the threads are all messed up. I tried a pipe tap but it seemed to be hitting the casting inside. I havent had time to look for a bottom pipe tap if there is such a a thing. Is this hole really a pipe thread and am I doing this right? I found a new pipe plug but it doesn't go in very far.

There should be regular 3/8" pipe threads in the drain hole.

Exclamation Re: Economy hopper drain

A good plumbing supply house will have a bottoming type tap. Remember - the 3/8 pipe is a fine thread (like 1/8) compared to the 1/4 and 1/2 inch pipe threads. Be patient when trying to thread, and when installing fittings, as it is easy to cross thread this size, If possible, use a brass valve, or plug, with Teflon Tape dope. Tighten just snug. If the threads happen to cross, it wont mess up the iron threading. The teflon makes it easier to remove next time.

Loctite makes a thread restorer. Don't see why it wouldn't work with pipe thread. Follow the directions closely.

Good Luck

I am almost done with restoring my 2nd Allis Chalmers tractor so I have some experience with old iron but this is my first engine. Tom

Tom , an easy solution to the problem. Do what the old timers would have done, Whittle out a wooden plug and drive it in tight, Bingo, problem solved. the wetter the plug the tighter the fit, After all ,whos going to be crawling around looking under your engine to see what keeps the water from leaking out. And wood is cheaper than a pipe tape Joe Morris
