Default Hollingsworth MEP 005A Info Needed

I recently stumbled into an MEP 005A genset and would like to know about the availability of parts, manuals, etc.

I'm thinking of purchasing this and using it as a standby generator for my home.

Thanks,

Rick

I have the little brother to that set - the MEP004. It's a 15kW powered by a 4 cyl Hercules 198 cu in 4 cylinder. I think the MEP005 is 30kW and has a non-turbo 6 cylinder. Manuals aren't hard to find, but I have found parts kind of scarce. I still need a few little doodads for mine, like the actuator for the radiator louvers, the centrifigual speed switch, etc. It's working fine without these, but I've not found a good source for parts. It was missing the voltage regulator when I bought it. I couldn't find the original part, so I built one.

These sets came with two different governors - standard (utility) and precise. Mine's a utility, which is probably the better bet, as there's less to go wrong. The precise sets have electronic or electro hydraulic governors on them.

They're pretty loud up close, but if you put it in a building, it isn't too irritating outside. It starts easily, even in sub-zero temps, if you keep good batteries in them. Fuel consumption on mine runs about .7 gal/hour at very light load increasing to about 1.5 at full load. I'd expect the MEP005 to be 50% higher.

All in all, not a bad set if you really need that much power. probably worth around 2-3k if it's in good shape.

I thought I had the only 15 Kw Hercules but mine is not a mep it is a model SF-15MD mfg. by Bogue Electric in 1968. I searched for 2 years for a manual which for some reason was not on any list of the major manual outfits. I finally found a manual which I purchased from roy@milradio.com. It appeared new except for the rusty staples. Mine has the injection pump on the left (intake) side and has the magnetic amplifier exciter. My regulator was bad but I figured out how to run it without one using a rheostat in the mag-amp control circuit. The voltage increases about 5 volts when it warms up, and and 2-3 volts when the load increases. Mine has the Westinghouse electro-hydraulic governor and after some adjustment it is perfectly isochronous. I need a schematic of the E1700 voltage regulator or a control board. I have not as of yet found anyone who has the slightest idea what I am talking about or ever seen anything like it.
As for parts for the 005 I have seen pages that indicate that the original Hercules people are attempting to form a parts business but I haven't dealt with them. Their address is www.herculesengine.com. The generator can be dealt with on a generic basis.

Hello Jim,

I have a problem and would like your expertise, We have a 24 foot food concession trailer, That has
two refrigerators, one quick and crispy cooking machine, several soup warmers a microwave, six
Head Pepsi soda fountain with an ice machine, cash register, misc lighting.
A friend figured the load was appo 15 to 18 kW, We Have a MEP 005A in the rear of a box truck that
We use to pull the trailer, The trailer has a 200 amp 220 volt box, How would i wire the connections on
The MEP 005A to match the electrical panel on the trailer ???

Thank's

Robert,

Is your 200 amp plug 3-phase; ie, A,B,C, Neutral, Ground? Or is it a 4-pin connector? (likely then single phase--two hots, neutral and a ground)

If three phase, figure out the "A-B-C" legs, and correspond them to your terminal lugs L1-L2-L3. Neutral connection would go to L0. Ground would go to frame ground.

If single phase service, you can run it with two of the three hot legs installed--you would just have reduced capacity (as in around the max load you're currently calculating). Also, if all your crispy machine and warmer are designed for 240 volts, they would work a little slower at 208, but should work. You will have to operate the unit at 208 volts, to get the 120-to-neutral, you don't want to crank it up to 240, as your line-neutral voltage would then be 138.
