Default Antique Marine engine installations

Just acquired a GRAY model U marine engine. Will it run forward and backward? I've seen a few drawings or photos of engine installations in boats, most showing some kind of gear box or disconnect? between the engine and prop. Some appear to have no gear box at all. What was a typical set-up, and function of the gear boxes? Did some have reverse, or just a "nuetral" function? Do some marine engine run in both directions?
Thanks, Tom
