Have a 5 HP New Holland with a compression relief/release (correct nomenclature?) setup below the cylinder. Can someone describe how this works? Maybe even post pictures? My dad's had it for 30 years and we're now trying to start it. I'm using a crank to turn it over and hope I can get the relief/release working before I lose an arm!

I would imagine it would be very similiar to the one liked used on my Gal.
Open completely prior to cranking and close asap when you feel it's running fairly good. Waiting too long will cause the valve to carbon up, but that's easlily cleanble. Does your's have a checkvalve in it? RickinMt. |

Hey guys, this is a New Holland, an engineering marvel!
No simple simple spigot valve would suffice. Somehow it works with a pull chain. I'll post pictures of what I have later.

Right from the instruction book:
1. " For starting the larger engines; pull up on the chain lever to move the exhaust lever away from the engine. This opens the relief valve under the engine cylinder to produce a light compression. The outward movement of the exhaust lever also causes a late spark and prevents kicking back." 2. "On the 2,4 and 5 hp engines the exhaust lever is held aganst the engine frame by a coil spring on the rocker shaft under the cylinder. When this spring is adjuster to tight, the chain lever will not drop on it's own accord after the engine is started and if the spring is to loose the exhaust lever will move away from the basewhile the engine is running, causing the engine not to give full power." Hope this helps Corey |

![]() ![]() Corey, thanks for the post. This is a picture of the relief valve I have and the side of the engine I believe the chain lever goes on. Sounds/looks like I'm missing the chain lever, exhaust lever, rocker shaft coil spring etc. Anyone have pics of the complete assembly or know where I could order one? |
