Default 6hp Reid

I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of some information on the Reid 6hp Powers. I have one that runs 7 wells. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Tom,
Thank you for answering my post. On the plate of the Power it has the no. 494 and then it has Reid Oil City Penn.. I'm in the process of hooking the wells up to individual jacks and then I can bring her home. So any info on this power would be a lot of help. You can e mail me at isobell_1@hotmail.com
Thanks again Tom, talk to you soon.

I have 8HP Reid engine #492, sure would make a nice display being that close to each other in serial #'s.

Hi Tom
I brought the plate home so that the plate would not come up missing. What I was wondering is could you explain the serial no. to me. Did they give the engines the serial number as they were produced reguardless of the hp? Example: Mine would have been the 494th engine made.
and Yours was the 492nd one made. even with the fact yours is an 8hp and mine a 6 hp.
Thank you for your time

I believe your thinking is correct that they used one set of #'s no matter what size of engine came off the line. The 8, 6, and 4 HP engines all seem to have low serial #'s from what I've seen, I guess they must not of made them for very long in the smaller sizes. I would say that they were all pre 1900 probably for the smaller size engines.

Hello everyone
First, Tom sorry I have not gotten back with you but my computer crashed. Had to reformat it and load windows all over again. So I will be getting in contact with you on the motor.
Hello, Dick, a 15hp that's great. I am just learning about these motors and such, but I am glad you posted.
Hi Boogie
Actually it is the entire power. It is running the wells that I own part interest in. Yes I do have pics of it but I can't find my usb cable for my digital camera. It is driving me crazy because everyone wants to see pics. As soon as I can I will be posting pics here of it. I would love to know any information you and any of the rest of the people on here could give me on her. She is actually in excellant shape. Well I shall go for now and I promise to upload some pics soon.

Default Reid Serial Numbers

Howdy,
Myself and H. Keller have done some reasearch on Reid Ser. numbers, from what I beleive are original records. #494 would date as 1898.
I plan on posting the entire serial / date listing of our findings soon.

Yours Fraternally
R. Farmer

hi Russell
Thank you so much for the information and I will be watching for your post. I think that is really interesting. Every bit of information I can get on the power makes me that much more intersted in researching further. I was beginning to worry that I would not find out anything on it, but everyone here has been really helpful. Thank you again for the information.

Hi there Boogie,
Yes she has been producing 7 shallow wells since 1991 that I know of for that is when we purchased the lease. She is shut down during the two months of winter, because the wells are shallow therefore the water out of them freezes. This will be her last time working, she is comming home soon and then will be a show toy. The entire power will be brought home and setup (engine, turn-table, clutch and belt). I haven't decided if I am going to paint her or just leave her like she is because she looks good. NOW IF I CAN FIND MY CABLE so I can share pics of her with you guys. Well got to run.
Thanks
Kautreena

y suggestion would be to just spray it all down with a couple coats of boiled linseed oil & mineral spirits mixed 50/50. New paint would detract form it's character. Can't wait to see the pics. Bill Klein

Hi Klein,
That is probably what I will do, thanks. I've been all over the net looking at pics of Reids and they are all painted up and cleaned up, so I thought that was the way they were done but honestly, being the Artist that I am, I feel the red is just too bright and makes them look too new, also takes the character away from them. On the other hand, I know it is a thing that has to be done to keep them in shape. She still has color, and not much gease on her. She's been taken care of. As my grandfather use to say, "A clean tool is a happy tool" so I guess that works on everything, including powers. Even the oil bed that catches the oil is still red. Thank you again for the mix, that is what I will use on her.

Thumbs up Re: 6hp Reid

That is Awsome! Too many times people cant wait to power wash and sand blast an engine to paint it. When it still has most of the original paint. But in a situation like this it deserves to be PRESERVED The linssed oil \ mineral sprits mix works like magic to BRING out the ORIGINAL paint....HOT HOT water and just a little dish soap goes a long long ways! And elbow grease with plastic scrub brushes and old rags, I cant wait to see the pictures of the whole set up! And I hope someone takes a camcorder out to the lease and films it, while its still pumping. This will be an awsome display since you said your were going to take the whole power house. What a piece of history! Please keep us infomed

hi again Doug:
So you don't think anyone would mind if I got her home spit-shined her and showed her without new paint?
I do have some pics of her after the old powerhouse fell on her in the storms of 97 if you would like to see them. They are pretty sad though. the entire powerhouse went down. The floods were bad and there was no way to get to her until after the waters resided. That is if I figure out how to up load them here. let me know if you would like to see them.
Thanks for interest.

hi Jerry
You know that is kinda confusing to me. Looks like they would have done each hp with its own set of numbers, but for the company that was building them I guess that was easy. Build it stamp it and out the door.
