Just use lawn mower plugs. J-19LM is what I use.

The original listed plug for the Maytag twin is the Champion H-10. That is a non resister 1/2" reach 14mm plug. The next best bet is the champion J-8. This plug is 3/8" reach 14 mm, also non resister. The reason for non-resister plugs is that the Maytag twin is a pass thru ignition system. The spark originates in one side of the coil, passes thru the wire to the plug, jumps the gap, passes thru the plug base into the block, thru the other plug base, jumps the second gap, thru the plug, thru the wire and back to the coil.
. Thats a mouthful! The secondary winding in the coil is totally independant of the engine ground. If you pull off a plug wire, and the engine keeps running on 1 cylender, the ignition coil is shot, as the secondary has burned a path to ground internally. The coil must jump 2 .037 plug gaps (a total of .074), under compression, to complete the circut. Compression adds resistance to the spark path. trying to jump the gap. Adding resister plugs such as the J-17 or J-19 LM Champions, increases the restance toward spark jump, for an already margional coil, especially the 72-D model coils. If you must use a J-17, J-19, or the CJ-8 (chain saw plug) made by champion, or their equivalent, try cutting the spark plug gap down to .020, or if you have a failing coil, even a 015 gap per plug may still work. Remember - resistance is the enemy to a Maytag coil . A non resister plug is best. If the carb air cap is set properly, the engine should not foul plugs.Andrew

I have an original Maytag engine manual, it says use 3/8 inch reach plugs.
Measure the actual twin cylinder threads, they are 3/8 inch deep. I have an original Maytag script plug, it has 3/8 inch reach. Champion 14 mm 3/8 inch reach plugs are "J" type. Champion J-19LM plugs are NON-resistor. Champion RJ-19LM plugs have resistor. Champion H-10 plugs are not 1/2 inch reach, they are 7/16 reach. |

Also,
I just looked in a current Champion master catalog. Maytag engines with 14 mm plugs are still on the list. Champion lists RJ-12YC as the correct plug. |
