MINE??? You gotta be kidding!! IF I had a shed full of engines or tractors, her word for the collection would be "junk".

Mine, she thinks I'm a bit
, but puts up with me and my "HERD" of engines and all that other "STUFF". She's not into fixing them up like I am, but would help and get greasy if I asked. She enjoys the big engine shows with "BIG" flea markets as long as I give her some $'s . She just might have more "STUFF" than I do . If I go before she does, she said my stuff stays and the kids and grandchildren get it all. Still might be a small auction someday.

Women don'it seem to like their man to have hobbies. If your spending money , it better be on them! My wife didn't like my hobbys , she wanted a divorce , I wanted to play with my hobbys. We both got what we wanted. Ron

My wife won't have anything to do with engines or shows. I do manage to get to the occasional show but get the silent treatment when I return.
33 years married and still together. Must be doing SOMETHING right. Just can't figger out what it is. Take care - Elden |

Greetings! I am blessed - I have about the most understanding wife a man could ask for. She has put up with illnesses and engine collecting for 38+ years. She has never complained once - and even helps out when I need another pair of hands. I always try to put her and family first, and she always knows where I am (out in the garage working on an engine, at a show or sale, etc.) instead of out drinking or carousing. She is even more understanding since she took up quilting a few years ago, and knows the joy of finishing something with her own hands. She also understands what it is like to want or find another engine - because she experiences what it is like to visit a quilt shop and find another piece of fabric for her next quilt project. She hasn't had her car in the garage for over 30 years - it is always full of engines - even though she has to scrape windows in the winter! I've really enjoyed collecting engines, but I'd give them up in a heartbeat for her - but she hasn't asked me to.

Hey Melonmania,
As you know NOT all wives are unhappy about their husband's hobbies, I get right into the thick of things during shows, demonstrations as well as getting involved in the club.

Hi Melon
As YOU know, some wives are very supportive of their husband's hobbies. Some of us help out and participate at shows, demonstrations and also become active in the clubs. I enjoy helping my husband and dig in there right along with him. Mrs B |

Does she get involved with HELPING and stuff like that? NO....and I wouldn't WANT her to....I do MY things and she does HERS.
BUT..she has NEVER interfered with my hobby either..knows where I am..and can SEE where my money and time has been going. In fact she wrote a poem about my hobby not TOO long ago. I posted it here then and I'll post it again...... I'm married to a man who loves Rumelys, John Deeres and Hart Parrs. I suppose some of you may wonder what these things are. It has to be a two-cylinder to make it old you see. Turning a crank or a wheel on a tractor doesn't sound like fun to me. I listen to him talk to others about the way they sound. When he starts them up, they seem to shake the ground. He's been known to take an old tractor and make it look like new. People who can do things like this are known to be quite few. when I watch him at his work on his Rumelys, Hart Parrs or John Deeres. He seems to be in another world with all those nuts, bolts and gears. I don't see him very often when he's working on his tractors, which is part of his life. I'm very proud when he works on his Deeres, Hart Parrs or Rumelys.....cause I'm his wife. |

I asked my other half to marry me in July at my club's show. She found out a few months beforehand that I had the ring but she didnt know when I was going to give it to her. I surprised her in front of a couple of my friends who all knew about it and were in on a plan to make her think we were just posing for a picture. I wanted to catch the moment without her knowing. Turned out working quite well. She didnt expect it one bit. She never really understood why I like engines so much until i took her to her first show, now she likes going, seeing the history, and the way things were done back before electricity. That was 3 years ago and were already planning which shows to hit next year. She still thinks Im a little crazy but will admit she likes it too. We've been together close to 5 years and everyday our bond seems to get stronger.

Yeah, ok, Craig, I'll get right on that. After the other half's gall bladder's out, come Wednesday, and she's done going to therapy for her bad knee, I'll hit a certain surgeon and therapist up for the dough for my Deere. Barring that........anybody wanna buy a piano?

I've been going to engine shows, since I was 10-11 years old...I'm 53, now. I didn't actually "get into" the hobby of collecting engines until about 25 +/- years ago. My wife wasn't too sure about this "new hobby", but being the loving wife, that she is, went along with it. Probably because she knows that no matter what i do, my family IS & will ALWAYS come FIRST. Over the years, we've been to many shows & met some GREAT people & formed some GREAT friendships. Now, she has "crossed over" & has become one os "US"...she has here own engine & really looks forward to every new show season.

I sometimes feel that I am one of the few ladies that actually enjoy this hobby. Dad was lucky enough to have 2 girls so we were raised to get greasy, and enjoy it. Through the hobby I was lucky enough to find a guy with the same interests. After 14 years of marriage something is working.
One down side, Jamie complains that there isn't one of us to try to talk the other one out of the next purchase, project etc. so.. the collection continues to grow. How many of us are lucky enough to get a Myrick Eclipse for their 40 birthday? Our two kids Jake and Beth (10 & 6) are also very envolved in the hobby and like nothing better than to head off to the next show with their engines in tow. Sharon |

OK Mrs BDMelon!(That is some name) My only fear is that someday we will be too old to travel around the country to the Shows!
We have made hundreds of friends thru this hobby and enjoy visiting with them at Shows. George likes to brag that he has never bought an engine at an auction. I don't think he has because he has me do the buying. Of course the last two engines that he was working on before & after Portland didn't cause him to tear his hair out but he did get so mad that he shaved off his beard! I didn't even notice it for 24 hours until a friend of ours mentioned it. He was so mad about the engines that he wasn't talking to anyone. I was ignoring him because he was in such a foul mood so I didn't notice the beard was missing. The engines are now running and his beard is growing back! Most of you people started collecting at a younger age and have many more years to spend enjoying the hobby! Helen |
