Hi everyone, I have been doing some digging on Reid engines and the paint colors for Reids. I have seen engines bright red, a dark maroon and even green. What is the correct color for these engines and are the flywheels painted a different color? is the flywheel rim painted or left bare machined finish. Thanks for the help, Jim.
On a different note, can anyone explain haw a pendulum governor works. I have never seen one and would like to jknow how they work. Jim. |

Jim this has been a long discussed topic. When I got mine it had evidence of a red oxide primer color on it. I asked, read, emailed and discussed this with many. Seems most were a maroon or dark red. But then the Sisterville engines were ship on trains and were sold to the oil companies and they painted them their company colors.
After scrapping crud off mine I found alot of orange on it or was it discolored pigments due to all the oil penetrating the old paint. As for the flywheels go I questioned why wouldn't they paint all of them because the belts ran off a pulley not the flats of the flywheels. Mine had matching paint on all surfaces. Personally I wanted a attention getter engine and a darker red than I got. It get lots of attention! It is bright red with a hint of orange in it. The varnished oak barrel and brass accents seems to turn heads. I wouldn't change it now one bit. But yes I have seen yellow with red accent Reids. Once owned by Pennzoil. Green ones owned by Quaker Oil. All Black ones and beleive it or not a pink one. If you can find some original paint on yours ( look under the bed and the back of the cylinder) and go from there. |

If you like the dark red, the almost maroon, try this: GM Dark Carmine Red - NON Metallic, for 1979 GM trucks.

Most Reids were maroon. I found a good original hidden area on my 8hp that matched quite well to the maroon sold by Agco for the 70 series Allis Chalmers farm tractors. I am an Agco dealer & we stock this paint but it is on the no-no list for shipping without hazmat expenses. Check with a local Agco dealer, preferably one from the Allis background. Bill Klein
